What about oak? Is oak safe for chinchillas? I have some that was given to me that would be perfect for ledges but I want to make sure it is OK for them to chew. It is white oak.

I don't know about oak. It's one of those that I have heard is perfectly safe from some people and other people say to not use it. It seems like it should be safe. The chins chewed up some of the oak cabinet in the bathroom...they're all happy and healthy still. :)

I have a bunch of aspen wood right now that I should cut up and make into toys. That stuff cuts up like butter compared to other woods I have used.

Oak has tannins in it that are toxic if consumed in excess to many species of animals. Livestock die from it every year from overeating it. I would just stick to pine.
