I'm about to get my first chin. (so excited!) I have done tons of research already but I'm still curious...The cage I have has a plastic bottom and because I can't replace it, I am making my own fleece liner from a how-to I found on here. I was going to make it extra big so that it drapes over the whole plastic bottom and the wire part that snaps together will hold it in place. That way all the plastic will be covered by two layers fleece and a middle layer of quilt. I'm hoping the little guy won't chew through all three layers and get to the plastic lol.

If that doesn't work, does anyone have any suggestions? It's a pretty good size cage for one chin so I'd hate to buy a new one. (I already had this cage.) I also thought about putting in a piece of wood with taller edges at the bottom if the fleece doesn't work out.

The reason I can't replace the plastic bottom is because it is the entire bottom with wheels, not just a pan. The cage itself locks shut on top of it.

What you are doing to modify the cage sounds fine. Some or most chins leave the fleece liners alone and if you have plenty of wood ledges, wood chew toys and a hidey house you are all set. Glad you are doing your research before you get your chin and welcome to the forum :))!

ETA: If he/she "ever" gets to or starts to nibble on the plastic, that's when you need a new cage. But make sure you cover all the plastic with fleece like you stated.

When I first started with chins, I had all of them in super pet cages. None of them ever chewed the bottoms. I wouldn't go crazy trying to cover the entire bottom. Wait and see if your chin chews on it. If you provide wood for chewing and a wood house, he may not even bother it.

i agree. i had a couple plastic cages and none the chins chewed it, just make sure there is no other plastic in there and lots of wood.

and like sandi said......once you notice chin nibbles on the plastic than it is time to make changes.

Just keep a close eye on your chin like Sandi and Peggy said, not all chins chew plastic, not all chins chew fleece. You might want to think of things to place on top of your fleece when lining the bottom. All my chins are notorious for picking up the corners of the fleece and moving them to the middle--which is highly annoying. I place a glass litter pan for them in one corner, their heavy ceramic dish in another and then I have a couple of tiles I place down to keep it secure from their rearranging.

Okay thanks everyone. I am definitely getting a lot of ledges and things for them to chew on and play with. Just wanted to be cautious :)

I have another question so I'll just post it here..

Has anyone bought anything from simplychintastic.com? I think their stuff looks great but I emailed them and I haven't gotten a response and it's been almost a week. Just wondered if anyone had experience with them.

Good question, bc their website looks like fun for both humans and chins! I would like to buy from them in the future as well, so maybe someone would post here. If not and you really want to know, just post as a new thread. Good luck with your new baby! AND good for you for doing research prior to :)

I've bought many items from them and my chins love it all. I have daybeds and the playcube set. I'll send Linda to this thread or mention your emails. I know they get a lot of orders.

i've emailed them asking them basic questions about their products before and always got an answer back, within a few days. I definitely plan to buy from them in the future. maybe they are just very busy right now.

Thanks Millie. I've always been a researcher with everything. Good to be a little bit of a nerd I guess haha.

And thank you Tagna. I'm sure they do get a lot of orders, their stuff looks awesome.
