Last night I found fleas on my dog, I immediately went out & bought K-9 Advantix (on my vets recommendation) and applied. I spent a good amount of time picking them off her last night and the slower medicated ones this morning.
Of course my worry now is that they are in my carpet multiplying and possibly can infiltrate my chinnies.

I want to put some flea powder in the vacuum and possibly on the carpet BUT i am afraid it is toxic to chins. Most of my boys are in the basement where the carpet is. Upstairs is hardwood and that will all be vacuumed as well.

Do anyone have any experience or advice. I used the search function but it didnt mention any safe products.

Chinchillas cannot get fleas unless they have little to no fur. Even then, a flea cannot thrive on a chinchilla like it can on other animals. I would not worry about them getting to the chins.

Also, it's not the flea eggs you need to worry about but the larva. In order for the larva to mature the environment needs to be humid and warm. I'm assuming it is neither in the chinchilla room, so just vacuuming will do the job.

When you vacuum, and you should do it frequently, it's recommended you dump or change the bag. I think that's way too expensive, so I dumped flea powder into my bag instead and it worked for when I had a problem with fleas last year.

Other than that, what Tab said. They never showed up on the chins, or any of the animals really, other than the dogs because they kept coming in and out of the house. It's also recommended you flea comb your dog thoroughly every time they come back into the house. Welllll, I would be out there for 4 hours 5 times a day, so that's not happening.

well i have a bagless vacuum but i can definitely put the powder in the canister.

i just didnt know if it was safe to use around them. thanks for the advice.

Garlic is actually not safe for dog consumption. There is even a note on the page saying that it is toxic "in large quantities". IMO...if something is toxic in any quantity, why give it? Garlic also has not been proven to deter fleas in the slightest. They have done lab tests comparing garlic, other home remedies and flea control products from the veterinarian. A few remedies did ok, but the garlic did next to nothing and the veterinary products came out on top. After all, they are developed solely for killing fleas.
