On July 1st, 2015, a chinchilla I rescued from a rescue a month earlier gave birth to three little babies. She had two girls and one boy. As of 8/18/2015 (7 weeks old), the boy is 213 grams, one girl (black) is 197 grams, and the other girl (black and white) is 184 grams. I don't want the boy to breed with his mom or sisters so can I wean him off of mom at 7 weeks? As for the girls, we are keeping the black and white one (the smallest of them all) but I don't know if I can wean the black girl off yet (because she is under 200 grams). When I wean them off, can I have the cages near mom so they can communicate and not get lonely? How long should I keep them after weaning?

The boy is okay to wean. He's small, but he's over 200 gm. I wean at 8 weeks. I've never had a boy get his mom pregnant. I would wait another week if it was me and see if he puts on a bit more weight. The girls can stay with mom however long as long as mom isn't being drug down by them feeding.

He was trying to hump both of his sisters today so I, personally, feel safer weaning him starting today. The three babies were big surprises so we don't want any more. All of the babies are pretty small but always have been. I hand fed the smallest because she was so far behind her siblings. There mom is small too compared to my two other full grown chins. Thanks for your help!!

If he was trying to hump his sisters it's because he's the biggest and he's being a bully. Again, he's over 200 and that's small but okay for weaning. I just prefer to wean at 8 weeks.

So I started to wean him but he lost a few grams. Should I be worried and put him back with his mom?
