the other day we found a chinchilla on craigslist about an hour away from us so i contacted the woman to try and get pics of him/her..

needless to say she sends me pics, he is a mosiac with a colored patch on his back, a pretty little boy no doubt!! he was in that purple cage that they have for ferrets the one EVERYONE and there grandmaw has lol...
the levels were DESTROYED!!! im talking about heavy chew damage and his coat had urine stains on it, he didnt look to happy nor healthy to me. his dust bath house was complete destroyed also i mean the enter/exit hole was completely GONE!!

she wanted 150 for him and the cage which was still a good deal but considering the situation i offered her 100...i told her his cage was destroyed and that he didnt look to healthy...she proceeded to tell me that he was completely healthy and that his cage was fine!! THE IGNORANCE!!! so she denied my offer for 100 and ignored my emails..i couldnt let this chinchilla live like this i couldnt imagine how unhappy he was ..i was heartbroke. i know you cant save them all but he was so close to us!!

so i emailed her from my moms account and asked her about the chinchilla. i knew if she knew i was the other lady she would completely deny my chances of saving this poor guy..so last night at about 8:30 she called me and said there were other people interested in him , but we wouldnt be able to get a chance to go look at him until sunday..so i asked her if we could come get him last night. she agreed so we drove an hour and 20 minutes to go get this little guy at 9 at night lol.

when we arrived i saw the true extent of how IGNORANT she was, me and my boyfriend tried so hard to bite our tongues because of how he looked...his ears are hard as a rock and all crinkled up and broken up because of having 24 hour access to his dust bath!! he isnt a fur chewer thank god but his coat is horrible from all the dust bath also. he was shedding so bad and it felt so bad!! also this guy is HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im talking about the size of a rabbit huge , he is 2 and a half of my chins put together ..when we were there she proceeded to tell me about the stupid lady that told her he isnt healthy! boy did i want to let her know im that stupid lady and your the ignorant *** that has made this chinchilla look so sick!!!! he is so sweet, the whole way home he begged for my attention...we are very happy we saved this little i mean BIG guy ! lol ill have pics of later today or tonight...he is at the boyfriends house :)

i want you all to see what he was living in..........

these are the pics that she sent me in the email...we will take better pics later

Poor boy! That cage is nasty and he looks dirty.I can see a whole chunk of plastic chewed off the shelf above his head.
I'm glad you have him now!

Oh my, you weren't kidding that she did not take care of him. He looks horrible! I hope that he starts looking better with you. You will have to show us. I am glad that you got him.

wow.. your are a chinnie life saver indeed! I hope you are very very happy together!

He's really cute and will be a nice guy after he's all fixed up! Great to hear that you saved him!

Good job, thanks for rescuing him. I can't wait to see his "after pics" he will feel so much better when he slims down a little and gains muscle from playtime. I bet he was fed a bunch of treats and junk.

he was atleast getting timothy hay i give them that much!! but he had a mixed variety type of food i didnt get a good look at it it was all in walmart bags...brandon said the bowl of food was HUGE and stacked to the top with his food...wow...they also had him in pine shavings..i felt horrible for acting like someone else but i couldnt leave him like that......i was so upset when she sent these pics ..ill send updated pics of him in about a week or so to see if yall see improvement on him..

also that dust bath container...YEA thats one of the normal ones with the circle entrance / exit...ITS GONE so that made it obvious its been in there for a long time... and when we were leaving she goes i guess i dont have to tell you how to take care of a chinchilla rite? i was like no i know how but i was hthinking your *** never needs to own one again...

It may have seemed like the luxury life at one time... but gee it doesn't look like those floors have been cleaned in ages. He does look like a cutie though.

That is nasty. I had one of those cages, well, I still do, but now my boys live in a QC and that one is a quarantine/temp cage. They are not hard to clean at all, that woman was just lazy and ignorant. I don't see how he can jump from one level to the other, or maybe it's the angle of the picture. Also, how does he even drink out of that water bottle? I'm so glad you took him, he definitely needed better care.

There's nothing wrong with shavings, just as long as they are KD pine or aspen. I use it on the floor of my temp and in a litter pan in my QC. She just probably didn't clean like she was supposed to. Poor guy. I would definitely keep an eye on his droppings or maybe even make an appointment with the vet just to rule out illness from living in such a dirty place. Poor baby :(

Wow, that is a messed up cage, :( poor baby. Agree with Brittney, pine shavings are ok as long as it's kiln dried or aspen as she mentioned.
