I would be worried about adopting a dog that hasn't been checked out by a vet.
Sam, my newfie, came from a shelter with no on site vet. They didn't even know he was blind. I had to tell them after observing him for about 10 minutes and trying a couple things. Not for profit shelters are lucky to be able to even take the animals in, in hopes of finding them new homes. They consider it good to be able to feed, water, and shelter them until they do. Animals with obvious issues (i.e., life or death) get seen, but other than that it's a "buyer beware" mentality. I took Sam straight from the shelter to the vets, not only for a check up, but to confirm the blindness and to get him castrated asap. The contract was for a week to 2 weeks, but I just wanted to get it done. He had an ear infection, he was definitely blind, and he got chop-chopped that next morning. Other than that, he's healthy as a horse.
Oh, and they were so happy to find someone willing to take a blind newf, they gave him to me for free!
Jenny - Congrats (?) on the new additions. I hope you're able to find homes for all the pups and that mom is okay to nurse them without dragging herself down. There's an idiot out here who keeps a nonspayed female TIED in his back yard, with no fence. Then he gets pissed because male dogs keep coming into his yard and getting her pregnant over and over and over again. Does the dumb*** get her spayed? Of course not. Why? "Because it's my yard! Why should I???" I found Sam because he was going to shoot the last litter of puppies, so I grabbed them and took them to the shelter where Sam was. I aaaaalmost made it out the door, then that big ole' black head popped up and I was a goner. <sigh>
