I currently have the glass superpet bottles but I've heard people talk about the Edstrom bottles and I was wondering if they would be worth buying or if the superpet ones are fine?

I think it's really personal preference. I used to have two of the superpet glass bottles.. a large one and a small one.. I always had problems with water flow and so I was super-anal about checking that the animals could actually get water out of the bottles. Not to mention, one of those bottles was knocked off the cage by the animal in the cage, hit the floor, and shattered. I personally just don't like them, but if they work for you, then great.

I have the edstrom bottles for almost all of my cages and I love them. I find them easy to clean, never had any problems with water flow, and with the shield, never had any chewed through. Great bottles.

But really....it's what you like.. if the glass ones work fine for you, then don't change unless you really have reason to do so.

I'm using the glass super pet one right now and haven't had any problems. The only thing I've noticed is if you fill it up past the notch for the spring holder the water flow is slower, at least on mine anyway. I just make sure I fill it just to that line.

I have had the glass super pet bottles before and noticed the same things that greychins has noticed. The bottle wasn't dispensing any water at all and I had to give it a good shake before my chin was able to get any water out of it.
What I like about the edstrom bottles is they have a large opening so I can clean the inside better, and the edstroms also don't use the vacuum effect like the super pet bottle does.

I've used both. I prefer the Edstrom because they don't leak. But I think they're discontinued? So you'd have to buy whatever stock is left out there. And you also need to either buy a guard for them or make one because they're plastic and will get chewed.

I do sell the super pet ones because I've used them and didn't have any issues. The only thing was that I needed to leave at least 1" of an air gap at the top and I would shake it as I tipped it down to get the vacuum going in the nozzle.

So it's really up to you. If you don't have an issue with your current one, then I'd stick with it.

When I first bought the Super Pet bottles, I had a small problem - no flow!! Checked out the inside if the nozzle, and found 2 of 4 had a small piece of moulding "flash" partially blocking the flow! Took a larger drill bit and opened it up, to the steel tube - curing all problems!
Since Super Pet is in Elk Grove Village, about 10 miles away, I called and made them aware of it, but really got no response from customer service.
Since have found that if you "bump" them with the heel of your hand, until bubbles come up, they're fine!

I just bought 2 Superpet bottles and neither one had any flow. I could hit it on the palm of my hand and water would come out for about 5 minutes, then stop again. Into the trash they went...wouldn't recommend them to anyone. The above fix seems like too much trouble for just a water bottle.

All of my chins now have glass Lixit bottles and I have never had any problems. They dispense water correctly and the only dripping they do is when the vacuum is forming, with only a couple drips...then they are leak free.

Has anyone actually tried those water bottles?

The morton jones ones? I have a few for emergencies.

I like them because of the wide top they wash really well in the diswasher, vs. the narrower mouthed ball drive bottles. They've always been far cheaper than the edstrom ones and their customer service is great.

The only issues I've had with them is with the old models where the nipple came out horizontally, they would sometimes drip strait down when the chin was drinking.

Edited to say that they do still make them here. I had 15 of these and half of them dribbled when the chin drank.

It's funny that you guys mention the water flow problem. I bought a glass super pet about 3 weeks ago and it had no flow. I actually didn't realize it until the next day when the bottle was completely full still. I didn't check it for flow because all of my chins use those bottles and I had never had an issue before. I thought it was just a rare defect, but I guess it's actually pretty common. I think they work all right. They do leak a little bit, especially if your cage wall wiggles when your chin runs on it's wheel. They don't leak an awful lot though, not enough for me to be dissatified or anything. I think that they're pretty good, but are a little hard to clean really well because the opening at the top of the bottle is pretty narrow.

ummm i had issues with every single glass bottle I have ever bought including hidden rust!! I almost had a heart attack. Now I use the glass bottles from Ryersons...I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee them!!! they work so well, no worrying about flow because there is no ball, and they are so easy to clean and CHEAPPP I think its was 1.50 for the bottle and holder together or something

Edstrom Water Buddy

I have been having problems finding a water bottle that doesn't leak. I've tried Lixit and several others but they all leak. I was curious about the Edstrom water buddy. I read that it has brass and that some animals have gotten zinc poisoning from them. Is that true? Has anyone's chins gotten sick from using them? I would love to find a bottle that doesn't leak.

What kind of cage do you have? I was going to order some but I couldn't figure out if the holder for it would attach to a FN and actually stay.

It can be a challenge Crysta, but if you bend the hooks a little bit to loop around the bars it will work. All of my bottles are Ryerson's. I've used them since I first got into chins and I really like them.

If I used a large washer to cover the rubber stopper, do you think a regular bottle holder (like the spring that comes with the superpet ones) would work? Or, do they have to be at that certain angle for the bottles to work correctly?

They have to be at an angle, both to work right and to keep the lids on. The nozzles are straight and they are glass, so there's no way to bend them around anything.
