My chinchilla has had a UTI before about half a year ago. He's having discharge again, but it stopped yesterday and he's overly grooming himself down there so that he's now missing fur. He doesn't seem to be in pain at all, but I'm still worried. The vet wants me to get a urine sample. I have no clue how I'm going to do that. I'm starting to think that maybe I will have to leave him with them for the day so they can get it. I know it's awful to say this, but I don't trust them to care for him properly. I'll be sitting around worrying if the room's cool enough or if the cage is sanitary.
Any input or advice?

If you don't trust your vet, find another one. I would trust my vet with any of my animals lives, and have many times over. Being comfortable with your vet is as important as being comfortable with your own doctor. If you don't trust him, you're not going to trust the care he gives.

As far as the urine sample, without it being sterile, that isn't going to be a whole lot of help anyway. That's the vet's job, not yours.

Find a better vet and have your chin taken care of by someone you can trust.

Uva Ursi herb is very effective to treat urinary tract infections. I've seen this herb being added in some chinchilla herbal supplements.I'm sure chinworld.com uses it in their Herbs'n Oats supplement. If you think your chin has uti again you can buy just uva ursi herb and offer a little for about 5-7 days. This is what helped me too to finally clear up UTI (I took antibiotics 3 times and it was still coming back)
Fingers and paws are crossed here for your chin's complete recovery!

Thanks for the advice guys, but I took him in thursday and he passed away that day. For some reason it spread too fast for them to help him. One moment they said he'd make it. Then a couple hours later they called and said he had a 60% chance. Then 30 mins later he wouldn't move. Then 3 mins later he stopped breathing. I'm going to post in the chin memorial now...
