USPS lost item question

I am going to try to get into the post tomorrow but I ordered a part for my mower and the box came today, it was even stamped that the contents where missing and that it was "damaged"... so yea, I have an empty box with no parts in it. There was NOTHING in the box except an air pack...

Obviously it was marked somewhere along the line that the box was open ( it was resealed with their "damaged" tape and was marked missing contents. So why exactly did it come to me, and what will they do about it? Anything?

I wrote the company and told them about it as well. Either way I'm now another week out on getting my mower fixed. I haven't mowed for a week and half now and when you're getting a couple inches of rain a week... that's not going to fly with me.

I don't think they'll do anything about it unless it was insured...and in that case you need to file a claim. http://www.usps.com/insuranceclaims/

Yea, that's what I was afraid of. I contacted the place, but I don't expect to hear back from them until Monday or Tuesday if they're closed for the 4th on Monday. If they don't get back to me I'll file a claim on it via paypal, I mean I feel bad because they sent the part, but they obviously didn't make sure the box was secured enough. It was a small flat rate box and they didn't use additional tape or anything....

I'll talk to the post asap though, I didn't make it in today. We moved everything with the push mower... our back section alone is the size of most people's yards... and it was so tall that you'd get about one row done and you'd have to dump the bagger... blah. John said he wanted the exercise... weirdo.
