As some of you may know, I brought home a new baby last Wednesday to be a cagemate for Poopy. As stated in a previous thread, since I brought Poopy to the breeder's to interact with the new chin, quarantine was compromised. I had two carriers to take them home in, but the breeder said I could just stick the two together so they stayed together during the car ride home. The stress of the car ride probably helped a bit with bonding. Anyways, when I got home I put them together in a clean QC Townhome =) I monitered them closely, since I was warned by many of you that their behavior during the playdate at the breeder's wouldn't mean they would get along at home (thanks for everyone's advice, btw). Naturally, the baby was terrified. But Poopy settled in just fine. (the little one will be 3 months old at the end of September, and Poopy will be 2 in November)
When I left for work a few hours later, I separated them using the cage within a cage method. I put the baby in the little cage first. When I got home later that night, I let both of them have the runaround of the cage. I stayed up with them into the wee hours of the night, and slept right next to their cage lol. I left both of them out the whole night and the next day, but I stayed in my room to watch them. When I left for work again, I had my mom check up on them every hour and text me to keep me updated. My poor mother, she was a good sport about it though!
When I got home, I refilled their hay bag and all was well until both of them tried to stuff their faces in the bag at the same time. That's when the kacking and humping began. First Poopy humped the little one, then Little One tried to mount Poopy back, which was comical because she's so much smaller. Still, it scared me. When I saw them rear up on their hind legs and open their mouths at each other, I immediately separated the two and put Poopy in the little cage for the CWAC. Not sure if i was being a chicken and stopped them earlier than I had to, but it scared me. I'd rather be a chicken than have an injured chin anyways. I left her in there overnight, trimmed both their whiskers back, and let them loose together in the cage. They've been civil, cuddly cagemates since then. I know it's only been a week and they can still turn on each other, but I'm glad that they didn't reject each other right off the bat!!
Anyways, there's my intro story. I was so nervous because I hadn't planned on having to introduce them so early, but I'm glad the initial part is over. Now I just have to keep an eye out for any more aggression, but they've been doing alright for the past week. Whew! And now... pictures as promised!
