Its been forever since I have posted on here, but something is bothering me and I figured the members of here would be my best help.
The situation: I am working at a local humane shelter until I find a more permanent position. I am currently getting ready to interview at the locat 4H office (hopefully my new position soon!).
The problem: This animal shelter I am working at is doing some really stupid things. They are overcrowding the animals and making some really stupid decisions. Example, they took in some 5 week old puppies and have put them in a room with older dogs. They also took older puppies (close to 16 weeks) and moved them in with some of the bigger dogs.
They also try to think of rare or different breeds to call dogs so that people will want to adopt them. They will NOT put an animals is a pitbull, chow, rott or any other looked down on breed. Example, some guy came in to look at a "Shar Pei" puppy, it was clearly a pit and I told him that.
The thing is that the vet the shelter works with has gotten upset with them before for overcrowding. The vet said they should only have one dog per pen and threatened to report them. They don't quarantine animals when they come in also. I graduated from Purdue with an animal science degree and have worked in many vet hospitals. They know this, but will not listen when I try to make suggestions. None of the other employees or directors have any animal experience besides their own pets. They think they are doing so much good, but have no idea how to properly run a shelter. They lying and decieving people is also terrible.
I don't know what to do. Part of me says just keep my mouth shut and move on, but the other part tells me to report them to someone. They won't listen to me and are just asking for all of these animals to get disease that would spread through the shelter quickly. I just feel sorry for the animals b/c they are not doing them any favors.
Whats your opinion?
