I have had my chinchilla for a little over a month. When I bought him, he was super excited and waited at the cage door ready to come out when he saw us. I took him home and since then, I have not gotten the same response. He will talk to me every once in a while and stand by the door, but as soon as I approach, he retreats. I am unsure if I did anything to scare him, or if he is just getting used to me still. He will come to my hand and smell it then walk away. The strange part to me, is that he will be all cuddly with me when he is out of the cage. I usually sit on my knees and lean forward on my elbows and he loves to play in that little area, or sniff my face. I just do not have the ability to pet him for he gets scared or squirms away. I just hope I am doing things ok because I am a new owner. I want him to be happy and feel comfortable.

Most chins don't care to be pet or held. My James hates being held but loves little head scratches, too much though and he pushes my hand away. Scotty on the other loves being held but if you're not holding him and try to pet him he freaks out, pushes your hand away and gives a look that could kill a lesser man. Ha ha. Every chin is different and has different preferences. He probably wants to explore you but on his own terms.

That's too funny. When they were here, they were just the opposite of how they are now. James used to love to snuggle and Scotty did not want to be touched.

I absolutely love all the input. Thanks so much. Keep it coming if you have anything else to add.
