Hello:

I would love to hear from you if you have experience traveling with your chinchilla from the US to European Union (or EU to USA).

My three questions are:

1) Do you know of an airline that will allow chinchillas in the cabin? Those airlines I've talked to put chinchillas in the temperature controlled cargo hold, which worries me given the long flight.

2) Is anyone familiar with requirements concerning microchip tagging?

3) Is anyone familiar with rabies vaccination requirements?

Thank you in advance!

Dave

The only member here that I know of who has shipped internationally is lilchinchilla, you can send her a private message and ask, she does not get on often but does return PMs.

The questions you ask depend on where you are going. For example, chins do not require, nor would I suspect would it be healthy for them, to have rabies shots. The microchipping is also not done on chins as far as I've ever known, it's for dogs and cats. England will not let you bring chins in, despite a rabies shot and microchip, unless they serve a 6 month quarantine. I would check with the country you are going to get their specific requirements.

I do not know about internationally but I have taken my chinchilla from Alaska to New York and Back again which is about 20 hours of travel time. It was a couple of years ago so my memory is a bit sketchy.

It depends on the airline. Alaska airlines required her to go into the cargo hold. It was only a 50 minute flight from Fairbanks to Anchorage. But from Anchorage to NY, she was allowed into the cabin with me as carry on baggage.

However when I went back to Alaska, I had to leave her with my family in NY for a year due to airline restrictions on allowing a chinchilla to fly. They had to redue my iternary anyways because one of the flights was co shared between US Airways and United leaving from Las vegas, which does not allow dogs. So he would of made it to Las Vegas and been stuck there  even though they allowed me to make reservations on that flight for the dog. So be careful when asking about pets, especially chinchillas. I would triple check with the airlines you are using, especially if you are using multiple airlines or the flit is co shared.

ETA:
The chin and its cage will still have to go through airport security, They made me take her out of her cage and scan the cage for whatever it is they were looking for. I'm just happy she didn't jump out of my hands in the airport.

Hi there! I was wondering if you've come across any information, or figured out how to get your chin from the US over to Europe? (I'm moving from Pennsylvania to Austria.)

I've had my chin for 6 years now, ever since he was a baby--the thought of leaving him behind or trying to find him another home kills me! But, for all of the airlines I've contacted, I can't seem to find one that'll be willing to take him on.

So I'm just wondering if you've been able to work anything out?

Thanks so much!
