I was just wondering, I will take at least 2 months of research before getting a chinchilla and would like to start off by knowing this and contacting the breeder. I live in Connecticut, for personal reasons (I'm young) I would rather not give out my town name but I think anywhere in connecticut would be easy to get to.

Just wondering how much questions should I ask about things on here there is a faq section so I can pretty much stay quiet and find info there or ask on here. It is up to you guys really.

I would suggest reading all of the FAQ sections and also reading the first 4 or 5 pages of posts for each individual section. You'll find most of your questions will be answered there. There is also a search function that comes in mighty handy. We are more than happy to answer questions, but it gets tiring answering the same questions over and over again when people aren't willing to put in the time to research. You will learn more if you do the research on your own.

Questions are always welcome. I am not sure about breeders in your area so hopefully someone will know

I live 1 and half hours away from NYC so if that changes or adds some options. I think I noticed someone on here who is a breeder from CT but not sure.

The only CT breeder I know of (or any breeder up that way) is Poetrue Chins. Cheryl has very nice chins and is a very nice woman. Definitely read through the forum, and if you have any questions on a particular subject, or need clarification, feel free to ask. We're more than willing to help.

I would highly recommend Cheryl, as Ash suggested. We got one of our boys from her, and she's been great to work with. Her website is here, and she also has a facebook page.

I'm not sure how close you are to NJ, I know my sister is in New Haven, CT and she's only about an hour and a half away from me. So if you are decently close, I would recommend Mt. Zion Chins. We got our two new boys from Barb and she has been nothing but helpful. Her chins are also beautiful. Her website is mtzionchins.com. If you're not close to jersey though, there is a thread on here by chinniecrew, she has quite a few babies for sale that look beautiful and she's located in CT. Hope that helps.

New Haven is really close by. I'll check it out but I probably won't be ready for that litter (what are they called?). What should I look for in chinchillas? I know there certain things to look for in reptiles.

my husband is from the stamford area. his aunt runs a rescue for small pets and occasionally gets a chin... although i dont know if you would be interested in rescues.

From a pet perspective this is what I would ask:

Personality of the chinchilla in question. Most hobby breeders should be willing to at the very least pull the chinchilla out of the cage, and see how it responds to being handled.

Ask about breeding: where did they get the breeders? Petstore? Rancher? Breeder?

Are they willing to answer your questions, and give you life long support for the chinchilla?

Do they "seem" reputable? Look around, the chin world is still fairly small and if theres something bad on someone it's sure to be out there somewhere.

If you can go to the breeders house(some don't allow customers in--thats fine), are the cages clean? Are the animals clean, cared for? Do they have fresh, drinkable water?

Cheryl (Peotrue) has wonderful chinchillas and is in CT. I would highly recommend her as well.
