Recently my landlord had my apartment painted because he is selling the building. I was told the bathrooms were not going to be painted, so I put my chin into there so the paint fumes would not bother him(he normally lives in my bedroom).

Came home from my business trip to find that they had painted my bathroom....and my baby was still in there. I took him to our exotic vet, she told me that unfortunately there was nothing I could do for him. She said he did seem lethargic, but seeing as how my neighbor takes care of his food and water for me, he was NOT dehydrated and was still eating and pooping. Vet told me there is a chance he could die.

Should I get a second opinion? I feel like there is something that could be done for him

Still eating and pooing is a good sign, but I imagine inhaling paint fumes would be similar to smoke inhalation -- for that, people (and probably animals) can be given oxygen to help them breathe better. Maybe meds too, but I think it just has to have time to work its way out of the body, and the lungs have to heal. Not sure exactly what could be done, to pull out toxins, as that would be in his lungs, rather than elsewhere in the body, maybe the bloodstream. Only thing I can think of would be oxygen therapy. Maybe someone who has experienced this has more helpful thoughts.

Is he breathing okay? No wheezing sounds?

If he survived the actual painting, then I would have thought he'd be alright now, since the initial danger has passed. It's just important to ensure he is in a well ventilated area now....

I unfortunately would have to agree with the vet, for fume inhalation there is really nothing you can do, the damage is already done. How much damage will depend on what kind of paint was used and how long the chin was exposed to the fumes. The only thing you can really do is get the chin out of the area with fumes and hope for the best, the best treatment is fresh clean air, open windows to air the place out if you can. The fact that he is still eating and pooping I'd take as a good sign, hopefully he starts perking up soon.

Missed the edit time, sorry. Are you able to move him to a place where there's not paint fumes?

Definitely agree he needs a nice well ventilated area. Lots of fresh air.

Oh wow! He might be okay, but I agree with others. Lots of fresh air. I hope he is alright! So sorry this happened!

I agree, lots of fresh air even if it means moving him out of the house for now. At the very least you could run an air purifier in the room he's in. This is a terrible situation and whoever told you they weren't painting in the bathroom should be held accountable. Not that that will make anything better. Unless your apartment is HUGE...I'm imagining the bathroom is terribly small like in most apartments...that small of a space, that small of an animal :( not good. Keep us posted.

Thank you everyone.

After the vet I did move him to my boyfriends home. Which was no easy feat with a ferret nation cage! He is still there and I have talked to the landlord and painters. Landlord was pretty much rude and said that he told me the first day would be bedroom/living area and second day would be bathroom. Luckily I still had the voicemail that he left me which said no such thing. I guess being angry with him is keeping my mind off of being sad and worried for my chin baby.

He seems to be ok, but now I am fearing he may be dehydrated. Still drinking, but definitely not as much as he usually does...so off to the vet we go again! I'm hoping maybe the vet won't think I am just ignoring her when she said not much I can do for him, hoping there is something!

I'm so sorry! I live in an apartment and I know exactly how much of pain in the ***** landlords can be!

I'm glad he's okay so far and I hope he continues to stay that way/get better! Keep us updated!
