Timothy or Alfalfa?

I give a good sizes handfull per chin. Some cages have hayracks that get filled, but most just get it on the floor by the door. Whatever is not eaten w/in 12 hours is minimal. You'll be able to gauge what each animal normally eats.

The type of hay depends on what type of pellets you feed & what type of hay is available in your area. I feed Nutrena 16% pellets & an alfalfa/timmy blend that I buy from a local horse farm for $5/bale.

Most chinchilla pellets are alfalfa hay-based so you only need to give a grass hay such as timothy. However, if you are feeding a timothy hay-based pellet, both loose timothy and some alfalfa hay should be given to the chin.

Fill up a hay holder and just ensure there is hay available at all times. A pet chinnie should always have hay for both digestive and dental health!
