I went to the store today because my local PetSmart carries Oxbow products. I was hoping they carried rose hips, too, but they don't.

So they had all sorts of cute looking chew toys. I picked a few up to see if they had ingredients listed on the tags (naturally they didn't) and noticed that there was quite a bit of GLUE used on these toys! This can't be safe for consumption can it?

Also they had these bundles of "fruit wood" sticks, but the label didn't say what type of wood it actually is. Does anyone here know what kind of wood it is?

As an aside, if the employees hear you talking to products and saying things like "Glue?? You want him to eat glue??" they may become concerned and ask if you're there by yourself and if you "need help".

Since I believe that my country is a few decades behind the rest of the civilized world in almost any aspect, I thought that this "pet-store policy" was only a greek thing. I thought that in other countries people would care more about animals and thus the products they sell for them. Apparently I was wrong. It seems that nobody cares as long as they get paid...
Of course glue isn't safe for them!! I wonder..would THEY eat it??
You say about the unknown wood sticks... Well in here we have taken it some steps further... You cannot buy hay from the pet-stores because you would never know what type is it!!!....

Glue isn't really harmful to the chins if it is the right glue. White non-toxic glue will cause any problems when it is well dried. The thing that would really concern me would be the "fruit wood". That's very suspicious...there could be all sorts of woods that are not safe. Besides apple and pear...the other fruit woods like peach would be unsafe.

Just don't buy the toys. The nice thing is that you can support small businesses run by members of this forum. There are several people right here that make very creative, safe, fun toys that are CHEAPER than petsmart's and MADE IN THE USA! :)

I second that. Buy from forum people on line. They care! The big pet stores don't. Basically, if I wouldn't chew on it or let a human child chew on it I won't give it to my chin.

I should change that...there are people in Canada and other countries that make toys, as well. :p I guess I should say that the chins are made safe without being made in a factory in China that could contaminate them or use unsafe. I'm sure that some of the toys and things made in China are just fine, but they still make me nervous. It's always better to buy more locally if at all possible.
