Day #4
So Kingston's been very good so far! He had his first out of cage playtime last night, and then again today. He didn't chew on much, he just ran around (my room is really big but not a lot to hide in/under, he seems to like sliding on the hardwood. I have a box under his cage full of all the no-no's I had before I found this forum (hammock w plastic clips, a wire ramp, etc. I thought I had this blocked off, but he goes under there, and came out with a box of raisins! (the small kind) I bet he thought he won the lottery, the raisins are now safely put away out of his reach.

I'd say so far the only drawback is all the poop! I set up some temporary poo guards until I get a deeper pan over the weekend. He's doing pretty well on a mix of mazuri and his old food, drinking a ton of water and peeing, he's really hyper too! I'm really glad he's doing so well :] I'll have to post a playtime video soon. He really likes attention too, but just being petted, no picked up. Well, that's it for today :]

Glad to hear he is doing well. Unfortunately, poo is just one of the downfalls of owning a chinchilla. Eventually you learnt to accept.

I haven't gotten his weight yet Sasha, he doesn't like being handled what so ever and putting him in a bowl just ended up with him getting loose (its ok the room's chin proof) I tried doing this with his dust bowl but he didn't want any of it. I'll try again tonight though, he's very jumpyyyy.

Anyways, here's a his first youtube compilation! Leave some comments if you're a member :]

Haley, someone gave me an awesome tip for weighing chins--using an ice cream pail, with air holes cut into the lid. It works perfectly! :D Besides...now you have an excuse to eat the ice cream! LOL.........

haha a whole pail too!
I'll have to try that, I tried another dust house that I could put my hand over the top but he just jumped around like crazy, I'll give him a little more time to adjust, I'll have to try that pail idea though. Time for neopolitan!

I use one of those clear plastic herp carriers/cages. I had one from when I had small pets and it works great.

haha I saw Gideon, they do look a lot alike! I've noticed a lot more gray tipping on the ends of some of Kingston's fur though, before he looked solid white but the more I'm around him the more gray I'm starting to notice. Is Gideon a mosaic??

Nope, Gideon's a white EC (Ebony Carrier)...he is TOTALLY white with the cutest gray ears...I love his ears!!

Yeah I thought Kingston was all white but he had some gray on his tail, but if you look really closely his at some of his white fur the ends are like a silver color it looks kinda neat. Might be hard to capture on camera though.

Tabitha - Gideon is still a "mosaic." When someone says they have a white/ec, it's to let people know that he's got ebony in his genes for breeding purposes. Most of the time though, people just say "white/eb."

So I'm getting him a chin-spin and I decided to take the big shelf out and replace it with a wooden one (I was so proud of myself). Even though it doesn't match at much it'll look good when the wheel comes and he has a more permanent setting. He rearranges everything I do anyways lol.

He has a pie tin now instead of that cardboard box, I was testing the litter box training and I had a plastic top that fit perfectly in the box but it worked so I went out and got a pie tin.

I put some poo-protection up, the back of the cage is covered in cardboard now, he hasn't chewed on it yet, let's hope he sticks to chewing on his houses.

I tried getting his weight on the digital scale, I put him in his dust bath but he wasn't heavy enough to make either of the scales read him. Anyone have any links to a pet scale?

Go to your local walmart. I have a digital shipping/kitchen scale that I found in the kitchen section. If I'm not mistaken it was $20.

I'll have to go to my local target on Friday, unfortunately when I moved to CA, the nearest Walmart became 3 hours away :/

Ohhhhhhhh I didn't know that....thanks Peggy!! Hmmm ya learn something new every day :)

Target definitely has them also. Just make sure it measures in grams, most do, and that the max weight is around 1000g. At my vet's office they use a plastic basket that has a lid on it to weigh the little guys. It is the perfect solution to the problem we have of how to get them to get in and keep them in while they are being weighed.
