I'm sorry she looks like a sad prisoner. :( Hopefully with fresh wood that will help with the fungus, but you might want to wait to put more in until you have regrowth of fur or it'll just plant it's lovely little spores in the new wood too. Easy to wash bedding, pain in the butt to clean wood.

Is there any chance you can throw her cage out in the hot sun for a while? Do you have hot sun? SD is sinking back to winter I think with blizzards and 30 degree temps!

LOL not your fault. I should have asked at what temp and how long.

I "can" maybe, but it is only to be 53 tomorrow. I live on a 4th floor, so I dont have the ability to make sure it doesnt walk off, other then to watch it. But I will keep that in mind. I took disinfectant, to all of her cage, and we are leaving all shelves out and houses, she has a plain empty cage just with fleece, and that is it.

Hoping that will knock it out of her. We put her back on the Sulfatrim as well to see if a second round helps. She seems in good spirits. I even go to scritch her for a minute, although she has taken to biting when we get her out of the cage.

Sulfatrim will do nothing against the fungus, it only works on bacteria. By needlessly putting her on a round of antibiotics you run the risk of building up a resistance to the antibiotic which you may need for something else in the future.

If the fungus is resistant to the normal treatments, you might want to consider getting a prescription for itraconazole from the vet.

Oh. Ok. My vet put her on the sulfatrim. He works in a pinch for small things, but if need be, I can take her to the big guys in Philly. I will look in to that other med, thanks!

Peanut is pathetic looking albeit a super CUTE pathetic! Here's hoping she gets all the way better soon! Keep up the good work Tara, you are an AWESOME chin mom!

Thanks Laurie! She has the cutest pout doesnt she? On the plus side, I can kinda get a pet or 2 in before she wigs out now. I think I will get her out and dust her myself tonite to make sure that is getting down to her skin too. She isnt a good duster. I dont think she had it much before she got to her foster moms.

You definitely do not need antibiotics, like mentioned above. If you just wait it out she'll get over it herself. Sulfur in the dust helps, as does Tinactin. Both are inhibitors.

She has had the sulfur in her bath for a week and the blukote and the chlorhexidine for 2 weeks or so. How long do I let them run the course before thinking of meds again? She keeps getting more spots. It will go away, and then a new spot pops up, poor girl.

Thanks for all the input ladies.

Poor little fungus chin. :( She is adorable though. Good luck with clearing that up, I have no idea how to deal with that at all...

Since it might be difficult for you to get the cage in any hot sun, I wonder if heating it up with a hot hair blow dryer would be almost as good. Or does the sun work because not only is it hot but there are UV light, too? I'm betting the heat AND light is what it needs. Just a thought. :hmm:

I'd give her 6-8 weeks. I would not consider oral antibiotics of any kind until 6-8 weeks or more have passed and it gets far worse (25% or more of their body) because it is so easy to build up resistance to the antibiotics. Ringworm is not killed by anything, it disappears when one's immune system builds up a resistance to it.

Two weeks is not much time in a ringworm battle, if you read the back of the Tinactin/Lotramin/clotrimazole (Target brand) it says "use daily for 4/6/8 weeks" because that is how long it takes a healthy immune system to take care of it. If you are immunocompromised, it takes far longer.

On the one repeat offender female (who also developed another skin issue) I stopped going after the ringworm and started boosting her immune system. It took three months but she is now free and clear. I've never had one get so far as to need antibiotics, but I've had people approach me with them that bad.

Have patience. :))

The vet did do a culture and it came back negative but he didn't say nor does he know what kind of fungus it is. Thanks :). I will def keep up daily baths and treatments. She is not good duster so we are going to have to help her dust.

I will update her progress as she goes. Thanks again.

For ringworm we've always used uhm... stuff for athlete's foot or microconazole ( for yeast infections). That would be fore us, people. If you rubbed in in good on a chin it would probably be safe.

She tested negative for ringworm. Which is why she was on the antibiotics. I did look up uses for sulfatrim, and to treat fungus is one of the uses. But she is looking better and she isn't on them right now. Just the blukote and sulfur and tinactin. I am hoping as we keep at it, it will disappate with in a few more weeks.

Fur on the face will come back as soon as it's cleared up, it's the body that takes a long time. I've had it completely regrow around the nose in four weeks..

Gotcha! Her nose is trying to regrow. It is the bump that is still missing all fur. She is a trooper that is for sure :D
