Several members suggested the "puffed pellets" for my little guy. I watched him chow down for a straight half hour last night after he got his meds. He was just super excited about them, it was so cute. The more he eats, the longer this trim will last him. I know it won't be forever, but to see him eat with such glee made me feel like I made the right decision to bring him home last weekend. I am still waiting to hear back from Barbi about the order, but hopefully he will be up to chewing on wood by next week.
He also put 20 grams on in the last 10 days! He is gonna be a chubster if he keeps it up, lol.
How much do you feed of the puffed pellets? I was doing 3 tablespoons, but hubby said it was almost gone around 2:30, so he gave him two more scoops.

Chili--That is GREAT news!! My vet was the one who suggested the puffed pellets and both me & barb from mt. zion go to her. She told me to feed as much as my chin would eat. If he is eating and gaining weight that is very hopeful. put as much as he will eat in his bowl. he will not overeat.
I would still offer a small amount of the regular pellets. even if only a smidge, if he has the impulse to eat it that would even give the teeth more of a workout.
I put pellets in Richie's cage every nite and for months he didnt eat them. I backed down a bit on his handfeeding and noticed he would nibble. last night i think he ate the most ever. i honestly almost cried this morning when i saw the bowl was nearly empty.
give him time and hopefully he will come around.
i cant tell you how happy i am that i went with the course i treatment that i did for richie. less than 6 months ago i thought i was going to have to put him down and i just work with him every day and really stick to a strict medicine schedule and still handfeed him to make sure he gains weight. i weighed him last night and he weighed 647 g which is the most he has weighed in many months!

Michelle, does Richie have root points? Chilli's teeth on the top grow outward, so I need him grinding those back teeth. He has no root points, so theoretically if I keep him grinding he will keep them worn down some.

as far as i know he does not, however; he has not had full dental xrays to prove that.
he has had xrays of his mouth which showed that his jaw is mis-aligned and that is why they do not wear evenly. he also had to have a tooth pulled and is prone to tooth spurs on his lower front teeth. his last filing was in early august and since then has not displayed any of the symptoms he was displaying, specifically the drooling and the tooth grinding. he is very active and has made great strides in his progress, however; i know he is not out of the woods. So i baby him and treasure every day with him.
