I told my so called friend that lived next door to watch my chinchillas. I had no other people to watch them, all of my family lives far away. I always thought he was responsible though.I gave him a list of the things I wanted because you can't expect all people to know what they need. All I can say is thank godness my trip was only for 2 days. I work for a bank and we occasionally go on these meetings meaning I have to travel. When I get home I think nothing of it I go over there and see them and all there stuff was empty except water (thank god) there was a little bit left in both bottles because these are BIG bottles. I called my friend to see if he was coming over 3 times a day like I asked (and which he happily agreed to) and I get "oh dude I'm so sorry I forgot about the little guys....hahaha" I was absolutely steaming mad. I told to give back the $100 dollars I generously paid him to take care of them for just two days! I also called him a few things that I won't go into detail with. I told him not to expect any more calls from me. I was so lucky (I should say hes so lucky as well) that they idn't have any problems. After I gave them a big helping of food ( I never seen the poor guys eat so fast) and their dust baths I took them to the vet (I didn't immediately rush them there because they were still acting like themselves) and he said they were fine. They are always happy to see me get home but i never seen them so happy just to see my face. I'm still mad and its been a few days which I'm sure anyone would be. thanks for having the patience with my story.

Oh and sorry if this doesn't fit into this category but I wasn't sure if it was here or in the behavior I should put it, but it was an emergancy to me. Also, they are still ok, but I noticed when I feed them they always rush over to me to check and see if I'm leaving because I have to walk away from them and everytime I leave for a trip I of course feed them a generous amount. Just so my babysitter just has to refill the bowl once that day.

Well, at least you are home now and your babies are safe. You weren't gone for long...it could have been a much worse scene to come home to if you had been gone for longer! Our family has the same problem when we leave for vacation and don't know who to trust to care for all of our animals. I got lucky and my parents watched over my animals. They live close by but are very busy and I always feel guilty asking them for help, but I have no one else I trust. It's too bad your friend wasn't as dedicated to helping out as you had thought, and maybe you can try to figure out a better situation for your chins before you have to leave town again. Good luck and I'm so happy they are ok!

Wow. Glad your home now and the trip wasnt longer.

I suggest the next to go away and have some one to sit for you. Make sure its not that guy and call once (maybe twice) to check up on them.

When I went on a 4 day trip to Gulf Shores, my daddy watched and cared for the chins for me. I knew he could do as he likes the chins and claims 4 of them himself and when I'm sick he cares for them. But even though I knew he could do it, I still called so many times in a day that by the middle of the second day...he told me I called again that day to check on him, he was shutting my cell phone off. I was really paranoid about leaving them.

you could probably find some one on the forum nearby you to chin sit next time. I have a breeder near me who chin sits for me. If I were I would be pissed to! I mean those are your babies. thank god they still had water. poor little guys, poor you.:(

Wow, with a person like that I would change my locks after giving them a key! I once had a fellow breeder at the time look after 4 of my chins for 8 weeks I had to be away. I had sold her a few chins and she said she would look after my guys "for cost". I gave her their cages and food and treats, but she kept asking for more money for hay and bedding. Ended up being almost $250 for those 8 weeks, started to threaten to keep them if I didn't pay (even though hay and shavings for 4 chins and 8 weeks should be no more than $50 tops). Once I got them back I never spoke to her again.

My pet sitter charges $15/day for the chins, and she calls me after she leaves every day. She is also bonded and insured - I'd recommend somebody professional next time.

thankfully I have family who will watch the chinchillas, or Marshalls friend Dave who lives across the road. That was horrible of him it isn't hard to watch chinchillas for a few days

I charge $1 per chin (usually per cage), that is more than adequate to pay for food and hay. I'd never let someone give me $100 for boarding for two days. They guy just takes the cake, how on earth could someone must forget?

I had a customer recently tell me that the going rate for boarding is over $20 an animal every day...that just seems like so much for having to do so little.

I charge my sitter $15 a trip to come in to feed/water/whatever. If she cleans cages I usually charge roughly $30-$50 depending how long she is there for. She's not there more than 20 minutes tops. If she is medicating I give more. She works with my husband at the vet clinic and she always leaves me a detailed note on who does what and when.

You should try the vet office. Most of the techs/assistants are more than willing to do that stuff. And they get paid more doing that than what they get paid working at the clinic.

I board Bryson at the same place we board my dogs during the holidays. They keep small animals in their cage in a sound proof room. I told them the temperature he needed and they kept it 2 degrees below that just in case. I always go back, even though it is a bit expensive, along with the dogs who get a suite with a bed and TV :) My pets are spoiled.
