We would need a picture of the belly to tell you. A beige has a white belly, while a tan has the same color belly as the back. (The color wraps around completely.)

I would guess that's a beige, but as Stack said, you need to show the belly. It just doesn't look like the uniform coloring that most tans have (at least mine anyway). It looks like the shading you see on a beige, but lighting and position can really make a difference.

The lady said she was tan...... I only got the one picture. But her belly was lighter colored. Could she tov tan? I thought she looked beige but, I'm stol kinda new at the color thing.

She's definitely not a TOV. I agree with Peggy, it looks like a beige but without seeing the belly, we can't tell for sure. My tan, who came from poor breeding, looks like he has the shading of a beige but has the wrapped belly color. If her belly was lighter colored, she could have a dirty belly.

I asked for more pictures and this is what she sent me...... Not the belly.... But hopefully it helps a little. She still looks beige to me.

from what i can see on the 1st picture it doesnt look like she has a white belly. im going to go with everyone else and say shes a beige.

She's a beige. You can see the white chin/chest area in that second picture, plus she has characteristic beige shading, not the more uniform overall body color of a tan.

You're contradicting yourself there...if you think she doesn't have a white belly, you would be saying she's a tan.

Looking at the second set of pictures, she is looking more like a beige.

oops sorry got mixed up :cute:
the color does look like a beige though so im confused. could that mean that she has a dirty belly? im still trying to figure all this out :))

In the first picture of the second set of pictures, you can clearly see her white belly. A tan does not have any white on the belly...at all. If there is beige in different spots of the belly, that would just be a dirty belly. That chinchilla is a beige, no two ways about it.

Ok, I went back over and looked at her, she has a white belly. So she is a beige. But now u have another conflicting issue. I took my "hetero beige" over to compare her to. mine is more grayish (maybe violet?). Mine is only 3 months old so I know she could possibly still change. But now I'm questioning if mine is a beige???

What colour are the parents?

And..... you have the beige chin already? If she is with you why did you need to ask the lady for photos? I am confused.

If you're talking about the chin in this thread http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20359 she looks like a beige to me.

Though, I have to say, if you actually took her over to another breeder's house, that's not a very good idea. You've been here awhile so I'm sure you've read about quarantine. Taking your chin over and meeting with chins she has never been around before is basically breaking that concept of QT. If this other person's chins has any underlying illnesses/diseases, you have just exposed your chin to all of them. Plus, any reputable breeder would never allow someone to bring their animals in around their chins for the same reason.

This lady isn't a breeder. She is my friends aunt. She just has the two chins who are both girls (the black velvet in the picture) we were helping her aunt move. She called her a tan, but she looked beige to me. The two chinchillas never interacted. I was just curious to the difference between a tan and a beige

Regardless, breeder or not, chinchillas should never be brought to someone else's house to meet with separate chinchillas due to the reasons quarantine addresses. Not only could it be stressful to the chin, but she has also been exposed to different sorts of bacteria that could upset her system as well as any illnesses that may be present.

Claire.... I have a beige. But the chinchilla in the picture is not mine. she was told the parents were a beige and a "black" (don't know if that means bv or ebony) then again...... Who knows. I was just confused on the difference between tan and beige
