Taking pictures of xdark eb

Well my picture taking talent is not that great first of all!

How do you best take pictures of xdark ebonies? I find it hard to show their real beauty. It always ends up like a big black spot.... What color background is better? With or without flash?

That guy I just got won twice section champion, once at Atlantic Chapter show on April 10th and before at the ECBC on March 20. But by the pictures I took, he doesn't look like that at all!

I got best results in a white box.

I like to take their pics using a white or light lilac sheet for the background. My flash always seems to wash them out, so I try to use my room when it is really sunny so that I don't have to use the flash.
