Hi there!

My male chinchilla, 9 months old, was castrated a week ago. The day after surgery his was grossly swollen around the genital and anus. The vet told me to wait a little while longer to see if the swelling goes down. It didnt and the vet suspected a hernia and he opened him up and repaired the hernia.

The "swelling" around his penis is no longer there (i.e. no intestines were present), yet the area around his anus is still grossly swollen.

I will post pictures later.

My question is, is this normal to be swollen around that area? I do not expect it to be a hernia, as it was fixed. It's red and almost purple, which worries my much as this may indicate a haematoma, or just simple bruising. I was wondering, where his testicles were before the surgery, b/c if they were somewhere between his anus and penis, it could be explained as simple bruising with massive swelling.

That is not normal at all, especially if he was neutered a week ago. He should be completely healed by now. He needs to go back to the vet and see what the problem is. Even if he was bruised, he should not be swollen.

His metacam was stopped today, as vet told me to do so. He is still on baytril.

The bruising is definitely going down, it was purple before, now it is getting red and yellow, which is good. But Im still not quite sure about the swelling, and Im not sure if vet has any idea what may be wrong. He repaired hernia, so what else can it be??

Also, he is very active, eats well, poops well, drinks OK and his wee may be a little bit concentrated. he wants to go out to run around a room all the time, but I dont let him out, yet, as im worried about his wound getting infected.

Here are the pics:

The colour has changed a little bit, but im not sure as to the swelling. The vet does not know what it is, he suspects simple swelling, but he also says it should be down by now. But he did not see anything suspecious when he opened him up second time, so I am really confused and worried as I have no other vet around to go to...especially it was a exotic vet!! :s

Dear MorpHDoc,

I know this is a very old thread, but after some extensive internet searching I can't find a satisfactory answer, so wondered what happened to your chinchilla's swelling? I've just had one of mine castrated, and he has the same problem. The vet said the same - nothing suspicious, and just wait, but there really doesn't seem to be any improvement day to day.

Best wishes.
