Well, I have been waiting for over a year for my extra dark ebony girl (Missy) to get pregnant. We had her evaluated by Gary Neubauer and he helped us pick out a beautiful male (Fred) to breed with her. I was getting frustrated because it was looking like the two of them just weren't going to make it happen.

This morning I came home from an appointment and my dogs were looking at Missy's cage and whining. They usually do this when we have babies. My husband told me to check to see what their problem was even though I thought that babies in that cage is very unlikely.

Well, surprise! Missy snuck one by me. She had one little extra dark ebony girl running around the cage like a little maniac. When I took her out, we discovered that she has an injury on her shoulder and leg about the size of a dime. It was a wide open wound, no skin over the area. We got her treated and she appears to be doing fine. She's nursing and following momma around the cage. I've got my finger crossed for this little girl and am praying that she will continue to do well.

I will post picures in the next couple of days. I don't want to mess with her too much right now.

Oh, we named her Gem, kinda after the dog (Ruby) who drew my attention to that cage. She weighs 57 grams.

Congrats!!! A long wait finally over! I also am looking forward to seeing a pic!

Any idea of how the injury happened?

Congrats!! Love the name too!!
I hope your baby heals up and is healthy!

Babies seem to heal up amazingly well. The only thing you really should watch for is that the mama isn't picking at the wound too much. Sometimes moms get a little overzealous when they groom their little ones and pick at wounds or little cuts too much.

Congrats on the surprise! It's probably better that way...you didn't have to worry, you just found a kit! YAY!

When the baby is feeling better, get us some pictures. You mentioned you have a baby chin and that has obligated you to taking pictures and posting them for us! :p

Jenn, my best guess is that it occurred during the birth. May Gem was not in an ideal position and got stuck, so momma had to use her teeth to pull her out.

Susan, yes I know I have obligated myself. We will probably take pictures tomorrow. I can't wait to show her to all of you.

Update on her condition. Gem is doing great. She runs around the cage like any healthy kit. She nurses, poops and pees normally. You wouldn't know she has an injury, if someone didn't mention it. She's also very feisty.

aww, Gem is beautiful!!! And I'm so happy to hear she is as feisty as ever, despite her injury! Congrats again!

Thanks, everyone. I thought that I would post a picture of little Gem's guardian angel, Ruby. She's a 100 pound Rottie/Shepard mix and she guards Gem as if she were her puppy.

that is just adorable!! Don't you wish they could talk so they could jump from behind something and yell, "SUPPPPISE!!!"

Thanks, everyone. Ruby always tells me when we have babies, but this little girl is special to her so she also guards her.

Update!

After, 2 weeks of healing, running around like a little maniac, and growing like a weed, little Gem passed away the night before last. Rest in peace my sweet baby.:cry3:
