I took my chin to the vet today because she has been having a green, mushy stool. The vet took a fecal sample and prescribed sulfatrim to help with the diarrhea in the mean time. Does anyone have experience with sulfatrim?

This is the pink stuff, right? I think over here it goes by "trisul".

If it's the same stuff, then it's okay for chins, but the only time I've had it for one of my girls was when my old chin Poppy got pyometra. Hopefully someone with better knowledge will chime in soon, and let you know how it works for cases of diarrhea.

Did your vet did any light microscopy on a poop sample to check for flagellates? Send a sample away for culturing and resistance analysis? The vet really needs to know what bacteria is causing the diarrhea, to be certain that the antibiotic will work.

In the meantime, do you have critical care on hand in case your chin loses it's appetite? That can often happen when they're on antibiotics. Also you might want to get some probiotics to offset the effect on the chins gut flora. You can get the capsules from any pharmacy, then just open the capsule and add to the critical care, or just sprinkle over their pellets.
Also, keep an eye on the water bottle... make sure your chin isn't getting dehydrated.

The vet sent away her stool sample and will let me know in a day or two. My chin is eating normally for now. I marked the water bottle to make sure she is drinking, which she is. I don't have critical care, but I will definitely get some. Can it be purchased at a pet store or only online? I have also been sprinkling probiotic in her water. I'm just a little confused, is sulfatrim an antibiotic? The vet told me it was just anti diarrhea medicine.

Sulfatrim is an antibiotic. It can be used to treat the diarrhea, if it is a parasite that caused it. It all depends on what the cause is. I have never had a chin lose it's appetite when on sulfa, not ever. The only thing that may happen is a decrease in water intake (which I have never had either). You will need to mark your water bottle to keep track.

Thank you for your replies! The vet just got back to me, my baby has giardia. I'm picking up the meds tomorrow.
