I have a total of four chins, 2 females and one male (adult) and one baby (about 8-9 weeks old). I'll start by saying that the one female is in a cage by herself, and the father, mother and baby are in their own cage. The mother was completely fine last night. Her and the father got out of their cage for a little bit last night, but were totally fine when I put them back in. This morning I went into their cage play with them, and she was laying at the bottom of the cage not moving at all. I tried to touch her, but still nothing. I had my boyfriend go in and check on her to make sure she was ok, and he said that he saw her move, and she was ok. About 20 mins later I went in again, because something just didn't feel right to me. She was still at the bottom of the cage (bottom of the stairs to be exact), but this time when I open the cage and called her name, her ears moved, and she looked at me. I thought maybe she was tired, and let her sleep. Before I went to work (20 mins later) I checked on her a third time, and she was dead. I don't understand, she was fine last night...does anyone have any ideas? I am completely distraught...RIP Peanut!

The only way to even possibly know what happened would be to have a necropsy done at the vet, and even then, sometimes the results are inconclusive.

I know it sounds like a cliche, but sometimes stuff just happens.

One possibility, you mentioned that her and the male got out. Could she have gotten into anything that would have poisoned her? That's a pretty quick illness to go from fine to flat in the amount of time you describe without either ingesting something, having fallen and broken something, or gotten beat up.

Sorry for your loss. Chins have died from chewing on electrical cords as well, I would take a look at any cords that could have been accessed. I just don't think there is any way to know what happened without having a necropsy as Peggy said but even then there is no guarantee. Is the kit the same sex as the father, if not you may want to separate them.
