so i am getting a standard bonded pair from the tx rescue this weekend.
i'm very excited, because i love standards.

my question............how do you tell them apart! i know in the beginning they will have numbers on their ear but IF they are from the same litter it is very possible they will look alike.
i already have 2 other standards living separately but they are so so different. one has a nice white belly, the other dirty and he is more blocky than richie.

so how do you all tell the difference?

Maybe when you receive them you will see that they look different, too, like your current two standards. Otherwise I would put a black dot from a permanent marker in one's ear for the time being. I bet you'll be able to tell them apart, though. Let us know.

I'm getting a beige and a standard bonded pair. I'm looking forward to meeting them.

They're definitely all different. I've had 3 standard girls in one cage at one point, and not only did they have differences in appearance, but personality.

What I do when I have two that look alike at first is mark the one's ear with a permanent market and write down which chin is marked. I sometimes forget which chin is marked (Sign of old age creeping up)

thanks! that is what i will do. i just want to make sure i keep them separate to monitor their weight. ahhh.........now to come up with names. ;)

I have a father and son pair and they do look different but I have to concentrate at first glance to tell them apart. Daddy is just slightly darker and their faces look different. The pair I just got from Arlington have the same color but one has a more pointed nose and a wise expression with a lot of stinkeye. The other has a sweeter face and right now is missing some fur on his nose. Hopefully they will continue to look different enough as they grow that it will be easy to tell them apart.

I have three cages of trios and one with pairs, all standards, and I can tell them all apart. However, babies are hard for me to tell apart sometimes (especially siblings!) since they grow so fast and can change a bit in appearance. For those, I trim the tail fur on one until I can tell them apart. ;) I used to do sharpie marks but i felt they wore off too fast with the natural sloughing of dead skin.

Try a tiny dot of blu-kote.....that junk lasts for months! It took 3 or 4 months for some gentian violet (the blu-kote ingredient) to wear off my chin where she got it on her ear (and almost as long on the fur...so just pick where you want your chin to be purple and POOF!). You can also get a bit on the bottom of one of their paws if you don't want it to show in pics. My standard got a dot of purple on her fur above the nose (thanks to my beige shaking it onto her) and it showed up in pics for months.

I bet you will be able to tell though. And you might want to wait to see them to name them. You can always send me a pic....I am very good at naming animals....especially boys.

Have fun!!!

I trim the tail of one chin so I can tell the difference. You don't have to look inside the chin's ear to tell which chin you are looking at. Just hold the chin's tail in you left hand. Place your thumb on top of the chin's actual tail and with your right hand trim the fur on the end of the tail. Trim the fur so it is like a horizontal line. You don't have to worry about hurting the chin because you have placed your thumb over the part that could get hurt.
