I might end up wanting to split my cage if my third chinchilla doesn't get along with my current pair. Here is a picture of my current cage (older picture, it is rearranged now with a chin spin and other stuff). It's 4ft tall, 4ft long, and 2ft wide.

I am wondering if anyone sees any cons in splitting the cage, and if anyone has better ideas on how to split it. I was thinking one way is that I could put wire mesh (1/2" X 1/2" or less) where I drew it in the picture. That would leave it 16" tall, 4ft long, and 2ft wide. I think this would be the cheapest way.

Does anyone see a problem splitting it this way? Think they would have enough room? 2 chins in the bottom section, and 1 chin on top?

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: Also, does home depot or lowes sell the wire? Is it cheap?

I paid $25 for a fifty foot roll.
Well I would find a way to split it vertically, I think chins prefer a townhouse style, hopping up and down floors, rather than a one story ranch style house. You know what I'm trying to say? I would divide it 1-1/2 ft for the 1 chin and 2-1/2 ft for the 2 chins. I think that except in extreme situations it's good for the solitary chin to be able to see and sniff the other chins (same sex of course).
ETA, I was looking and thinking, you could take the lid off your cage to use as a vertical divider and buy something else to use as a cage lid. The divider may have to be at a slight angle to fit in there.

I thought about vertically, but the way the doors are I don't see how I would do it and still be able to easily access the chinchillas and clean the cage.

I could possibly do it right in the middle of the door, that would hopefully be enough room for me to get in there and change stuff around/vacuum/catch them. I would have to figure out how to attach the wire and where exactly to do it.
