Ok so me and my husband are fairly new chin owners. today when we were trying to introduce our new chins, one was in the cage one was out. Our newer chin mr. wu's toe was bitten trough the cage. It is a very small bite, he does not seem all the bugged about it. He even sat next to the other chins cage for a little while. He is now in his cage and is just trying to sleep. Does he need to go to the vet? Will he be ok? What do I need to watch for??? Thank you so much for the help!

Most of the time toe bites aren't a huge deal. Watch for redness, swelling, pus. If any of those occur, he will most likely need a course of antibiotics to clear out any infection. You can also try soaking the foot in warm water with epsom salts as it helps to get the infection out.

If there is bone sticking out, you should take him to the vet to see if that can be sewn over or if it needs clipped off.

I also wanted to add to make sure the cage is clean.

Also monitor the chin to make sure he doesn't chew at it, as that is a sign that it's causing him pain.

Most toe bites heal on their own, but do keep an eye and make sure the wound/cage is clean.

When I was using breeding runs I had toe bites all the time but I only had one that was really bad and needed to be removed. But the rest always healed on their own. I just made sure that the cages were really clean.

ok thank you guys so much for the help. it seems to be healing on its own so far, no signs of infection. yay!

I have several missing toes from toe bites. like said above, extra clean cage and observation for infection is all that is usually required. it is a common injury
