So, I'm currently looking for a nearby place [SLC, Utah] to buy _large_ amounts of chin friendly sisal. Are there any stores that carry such rope?
[And is there any way to safely seal wood, from their pumice dust? Or is there any other solid material that would work that they won't chew on and is dust proof?]

Your best bet would be to look online. I'm not aware of any stores that sell animal friendly sisal. Most places sell the oiled kind.

If you can't find anything that you're looking for, I've got a bunch of coconut rope, which is similar to sisal. It's about 1/4" in diameter.

I normally sell it for $1/yard but I can do cheaper if you want a lot of it.

I also have 2 of the sisal rope coils listed on that second site that I've had for over a year now and haven't used. I can sell them to you if you want them.

I was doing a search and didn't want to start a new thread, but have a question. I got some sisal from Wal Mart to redo a cat post. It says natural fiber and the ingredient list says 100% sisal. The little chin went nuts for it when I tied some to a wooden block. She was hauling the block up and down the ramps with her. It doesn't look like it's got any oil on it. Can I let her chew on it without worries, just because it doesn't say it is specifically animal safe?

Nevermind. I took it out of her cage. I smelled it and it smells like it's been treated. Darn, I'll have to get some online.

Thanks. I got the 1/4". I didn't think to smell it until I read another thread. It has a strong oil smell. The untreated rope is expensive. Healthy always seems to be more expensive.

Chewing is good... there is nothing to really seal shelves from dust, I've never had a problem with dust... it's pee I have problems with!

I found this site..http://www.nalanitoys.com/Sisalrope.htm. And they included this note as to the use of sisal rope from Lowes and Home Depot:

Important Note: In an effort to settle the ongoing debate about using "natural" sisal rope from hardware stores, we contacted the manufacturer who supplies Home Depot and Lowe's with their rope under various label. They emphatically stated that under NO circumstances should any sisal they manufacture be used for pets. There you have it folks - straight from the source!
