I picked up some Sisal rope at the store today to hang some of my chin's chew toys. When I opened the package it really stank. Is this normal for this type of rope?

It may be treated with chemicals. I would not use any rope from a store unless it was labeled untreated. I get my sisal rope from an online bird toy supply store. This rope is actually meant to be used for toys, where as the rope you purchase from a store most likely isn't meant for possible consumption.

It's lubed with industrial oil while it's being made to cut down on friction, otherwise the rope factories would have fires all the time.

That makes sense. I found it had that oil or petroleum smell. Off in the trash it goes.

Thanks!

Just put it in the garage, I bet if it's allowed to air out you can always use it for something else, maybe tying a christmas tree in your trunk or something like that.

Yup! as long as it is untreated sisal it is just fine for either animal!
