One last thing about the alarm system and you being home....the class was taught by a cop who said it can take up to 13 minutes for the police to reach your home
Yeah we live 30 minutes away from the Idaho State Police, they are about the only ones to respond at night, but they take forever to get here. A house down the street was getting an alarm system installed and we joked that it would say "Freeze the police will be here in 2 hours"
Chantel, Jeremy said any model will be fine, one that will take 3 inch shells is best but 2-1/2 inch shells is OK too. Are you thinking new or used?

Either one, and tell him thank you so much! What a nice man you have to help the girlies on the forum! :)

Luckily no kids for now, so just the chins, hedgies and us, and it will be loaded if I get one. I have read about safes like 6Dusters mentioned, and think that is a good idea. Our bedroom is on the other side of the house, and upstairs, from the doors so hopefully I would wake up and could get it out quickly.

We also do have a security system but I have had a few times when I lived in MN where they took over an hour to get to my house in an emergency, and 2 times I have gotten a busy signal. So, I am not too inclined to rely 100% on the police, the alarm and a kick to the balls from an 125 pounds girl. I don't want him to get any where near that close to me!

Just be careful! I've seen pictures of you, and you are tiny (and beautiful!). I'd hate to see you and a burglar wrestling for a gun, because I'm pretty sure you wouldn't win. Guns are also 4 times more likely to be involved in an unintentional shooting than for self defense. Can you tell I'm not a fan of guns in the home? ;) I'd keep something like pepper spray or a stun gun near my bed long before I'd ever buy a gun.

A gun in combonation with an alarm sounds pretty good, the alarm should give you extra warning time to arm yourself. Pepper spray isn't the best defense and will affect you as well, but not other intruders who weren't in the room when you sprayed. Plus they can simply shoot you to make you stop. A taser will only work on one person and only if it contacts and grips the skin or goes through thin clothing. After 3 seconds the intruder can and will simply pull the taser out. Statisticly most crimes are commited by 2 or more people and I won't even go into gangs.

I would never recommend pepper spray for self defense. Most states it is illegal, and unless you have been sprayed then when you go to spray someone you are more likely to be affected than they are. Most criminals have been sprayed, they know what is coming, you probably are not going to spray yourself for the heck of it, so it will knock you down before them. Makes you an easier target. Law enforcement is required to be sprayed to carry (at least in this state), this gives you an idea of what to expect, how wind effects it etc... Some people are immune to it, so spraying them means nothing, some drugs also make it so people don't feel it. I am not a huge fan of pepper spray - works great on dogs, other than that I don't recommend it.

Tasers are another issue, works on most people, but not all. I know of some instances where it has taken 3 tasers to take a guy down. If you miss with a probe also not going to work, most legal tasers for civilians only have 1 charge, so if you miss then you have nothing. Drugs make some people immune to it. Again Law enforcement has to be shot with it to carry it, so they know how they will react.

A good self defense course, home security, and then knowledge, training, and knowing that you can use a gun if needed. Here, I live in a town, PD back up is fairly close. Where I lived last year State police or County would be the response, if a crime occured around 2 -3 am you are looking at an hour response time for anything. I have seen ambulances take an hour to get to someones house on a 911 call, and have the police be behind that. The city of Houston has more Law Enforcement than the entire state of Maine, and that is if you count every single form of law enforcement in Maine and add it up. This is a very large state, and has a lot of rural areas. In one county only 2 deputies work nights - they each over over 950 square miles.

You can buy special ammo for some riffles that are non wall penetrating - our state police use them. That way in a bad situation they don't have to worry about accidentally shooting someone in the apt. next door, or a child in the next bedroom.
