I have a question regarding the little sappire I got from Jill.
He is so tiny and he is over 1 year old. When I got him he was actually under 400 grams and now he is about 455g. But compared to all my others he is still the smallest. He eats and drinks fine, including hay. I try to give him an extra treat here and there to beef him up a bit.
So......my question. Are sapphires tradionally smaller than other mutations of color??

Yeap, sapphires are usually smaller than the other mutes, but as time goes by they're getting larger with better breeding. A lot of the sapphires I see these days are around 600g, but I've never seen a super huge sapphire - but maybe that's because I don't breed them, nor do I really search for sapphires because I don't like the mutation. Klinger is a cutie though, I remember him on the show table - tiny little guy, but his fur beat out the rest of the sapphires.

Okay, here's another question about sapphires: Are they prone to weepy eyes? I've been noticing for a while now that some chins with eye issues have been sapphires, or is that just a coincidence?

I have to say even my sapphires are a bit smaller then my other animals average wise. The babies seem to also grow slower, But I have not had any weepy eye problems with my sapphires so that is just a coincidence

I have several sapphires and none of them have weepy eyes, I don`t think it has anything to do with the color of a chinchilla.

On average sapphires are smaller than the other mutations, but I have a few females that are in the high 700s. With the males on the other hand I am struggling to get better size. If I am lucky they grow up to be in the 600s, but I am working on it.
