I've only ever heard of Epsom salt soaks. I know that is magnesium sulfate and table salt is sodium chloride. I have sea salt at my house, which is mostly sodium chloride but has some other compounds in it. I feel like there are several significant chemical differences in the two salt compounds, so I could see one being unsafe and the other safe.

Chloe got a scratch on her toe several days ago and while it is improving, it still looks pretty swollen. I was trying to look into Epsom soaks by the suggestion of someone who posted on the original thread about her toe. But I can't really find anything that says whether or not any other salt is ok. I think I remember doing a sea salt washes on myself, for a piercing years ago, but I don't know what is appropriate for chins.

I don't really know how the whole soaking thing works, molecularly, so I can't really figure out an answer for myself that way. Which also leaves me unsure of what their purpose is. I am under the impression they are cleansing which help with irritation and subsequent swelling. Does anyone know what the acceptable salts for soaks are? Thanks.

Anyone? I went to the store but they didn't have Epsom salt, so for now I am still stuck with sea salt. Her toe is still red and swollen.

Thanks, Annie. Although, I have regular sea salt, not from the Dead Sea. But looking into it, it seems they pretty much have the same compounds just in different ratios.

I always use sea salt for things like that. I used it on a chinnie-toe once and it worked beautifully.

I have used both and they worked equally as well (though one was on myself and one was on a chinchilla). I have used sea salt on myself to cleanse and help heal piercings/wounds, and epsom salt on a chinchilla with a wound on his tail. Both worked well.
