i use aspen shavings for my chinchillas is there any other kind that might be sage. i have to drive 30 minutes away just to get them lol

Or go to your feed dealer/livestock store and get a bale of shavings or the pelleted bedding. A 20lb bale is only $5.75 here, it's 40 cubic feet of compressed shavings. The pellets come in 40lb bags and are ~$6 depending on brand.

Way cheaper than Wal-Mart!

When looking for pine, if at all possible, buy the kiln-dried pine. It has fewer oils than the non kiln-dried pine, and the oils aren't good for small animals. (Most research has been done in rabbits and other small animal species, but most small animal fanciers will recommend kiln-dried if they even recommend pine at all.)

Around here, I've found that the kiln-dried is no more expensive than not and that the kiln-dried tends to be lighter in color (less red) and less fragrant. The feed stores around here don't tend to know which is kiln-dried but carry at least two kinds, so you can usually identify the potential kiln-dried ones using the above criteria. Then you often have to go to their website and read the details to be sure. Also, it's best to open the bag of shavings before you need it to air it out a bit.

And yes, I use feed stores which carry the product much cheaper, have much fresher bales with less chance of bugs and other things just because of turnover, etc. -- plus I prefer not to patronize the pet stores that still choose to sell commercially produced live animals.

I've not seen pine shavings at Wal-Mart that specify they are kiln-dried. Yours may have some, but I get mine from a feed store as well. I get 4-5x the amount of shavings for the same price (or maybe $1 more) than the small bag of shavings at a pet store.

I am just curious about why you did not know this yet you are going to be breeding... How does this make any sense? This is basic knowledge stuff, it's posted everywhere. I mean, I am worried about the welfare of these animals. You need to do more (alot more) research.

The one at my walmart is kiln dried even though it doesn't say it. Non kiln dried pine has a strong scent. The pine at my walmart barely has any smell at all.
