NOLA Chins

Guest
We had 3 young females- ebony, violet and mosaic- picked up yesterday. They were left at the Mobile, AL municipal animal shelter. They were in a FN 142. The woman that left them was in tears but didn't know what else to do. I know that 2 of their local chin rescues closed in the last couple years, but still, it's sad. I wonder how many chin owners don't know of the online chinny world.

A friend of a woman who has 3 chins from us drove and picked them up and delivered them to us. They were being kept outside because it was assumed it would be less stressful than inside with the other animals. At least they were only there a few hours. The shelter kept the 142 to house 2 cats.

We have watched as HS surrenders have gotten closer and closer to us. Last week it was Houston and Franklin, TN. Now Mobile. I guess it's time to send out an info sheet to shelters down here so they know what to do till someone can get there. We are networking and can get pick-up people to much of the the Gulf South region from Freeport, Tx to Panama City, FL. Our bottom line is that no chin will get euthanized.

But we wonder, how long till we, too, go over capacity? Not feeling real chipper in spite of the three little beauties and a huge cage that was donated today for them- thanks Kara.

So sad....
It seems odd that an ebony, violet and mosaic were dropped off like that. She did NOT get them from a pet store! I would bet that she found them on-line, but I wonder why she couldn't rehome them? Why the drop off at shelter?
Such a shame!

Rick, if you need housing on this side email me. My vet is learning in leaps and bounds and I've got a room in my house for the larger pet caging.

So far I haven't needed to take in chins - I've matched them with chin-seeking homes and the people involved have handled the transactions. Everyone's been happy so far.

I haven't spoken with the Lafayette Parish HS recently, but I will again. I think they've had a change in managers.

I did meet the 'backyard exotic pet mill-type couple' of the area (so to speak) that supply the pet stores here. They didn't want to talk to me or even be friendly so I'm not sure why they came to the PetSmart pet party with their chinchillas.

Rick,

I've seen your NOLA rescue ads here. I usually check the CL Pensacola/Panama City area ads also. Thank goodness, I actually haven't seen any chinchillas on them since I moved here a few months ago. I don't have space right now, but after we finish redoing the chin room (probably mid-June), I would be glad to also help out if you are running out of space and can hold/help find homes for chins in this area.

Rick, I saw the picks of these 3 lovely girls in the cage that Kara donated, they are so precious. You should post pics here and I'm sure they will be adopted very quickly.

BTW, did you know you can get 250 free business cards from Vistaprint.com. I've ordered cards for my pet business and my Avon business with no obligations to buy anything else. You can print some general chin care notes along with your contact information and leave them or mail them to all the shelters.

Good luck!

These girls are absolutely BEAUTIFUL & sweet, I am still in awe that they were in that shelter!! Oh and Rick, I've gotten 4 chins from You, not 3, Chillie, Charlotte, Lily & Onyx!! Hopefully We can make that 5!! ;)

i LOVE vistaprint!! every time you order you get free stuff and the last time i ordered for my company i got pads that say I :heart5: my chinchillas
and they even have a pic of a chin!

Hi,

We've adopted out about a chin a month over the last (almost) 2 years and I don't forsee a problem with the girls. I guess, though, that we need to gear up in advance of joining the rest of the country.

It would be good to have emergency pick-up people in both the Panhandle and the Layfayette areas. I'll PM you both in the next couple of days.

Tina, thanks for the tip. We just got business cards but I never thought about putting a few simple instructions on the back. That's a great idea. I'll check it out.

Aimee, you are lucky I can count past 2 when you're around. BTW, they look like a bonded trio to me ! Just how bad do you want her? <snicker, twirl moustache>

I saw those on petfinder when I was posting Lala. My parents live in Pensacola, FL and I was going to go there at the end of the month. I had no idea they were outside otherwise I would have moved the trip up. I emailed them and never did get a response, but I assume now that was because they were already picked up.

I am very happy you were able to get them. I once again can't believe they were outside, especially in the southern heat. I am glad they made it through in one piece.

They weren't out in the sun, they were in a "shelter" meaning a roof but no A/C or humidity control, it was almost 90 degrees the day they got picked up... I know it's awful... The word just needs to get out more "main stream" ESPECIALLY to the shelters & pet stores of chin care and the rescues that can get them in good loving homes... I feel like We are banging Our heads against a wall...
