has anyone heard of this 'type' of chinchillas - I had someone who moved to the US from Germany ask me (emailed me) if I bred them or if I knew anyone who did
Or is this another person who is confused about the breed of cat called Persians that has a color called 'chinchilla' ???

Yes, there is such a thing. But people in the US can't get them right now. And well, they're super expensive too.

For curiosity's sake, why can't they be sold to people in the US? Not looking to buy, just curious...

WOW! That's just a bit out of my price range.

They probably don't want to sell them in the US yet because they don't want people getting ahold of them and breeding them willy nilly.

I was under the impression that it was because then others would breed them and there goes their profit. Most of the mutations that we have now at one point in time were really expensive when they first were sold. So I'm sure eventually people will get them

It was my understanding that they are not currently selling to US buyers because of the limited supply. They want everyone to have a fair chance so (I believe) every other year they sell to US buyers...and then foreign buyers on the opposing years.

They are cute but call me boring b/c I still prefer the look of the dark standard and their sleek fur. Yeah, I just saved myself 4K! To each their own of course.

Just out of curiosity, I had a look at those links and read the details and noticed they were all quite small: 400-600 gram range. Are they all small like that and are they generally a smaller animal all around or are those listed for sale not full grown yet?

Most mutations when starting out start off small. So it's likely that they don't have the size to them yet.

I would never spend that kind of money on any animal, sadly to say, but realistically as well. But they sure are adorable!

If only fairness was on their mind. The Angoras have not yet been offered for sale in the US.

As for the size issues, it is a pretty well known issue, and sadly this isn't a very new mutation, not sure which strain they work with, but long haired mutations go back to the 50's.

Ya Jeff, you got that right. They aren't offered here in the US because their breeders don't want the competition. There is no exclusivity if everybody and their brother is breeding them. You surely aren't going to get $2000 plus for them when, much like "regular chins", you can't walk down the street without tripping over someone who breeds them.

It definitely ain't fairness that lead to that decision. :)

i have seen them, and they really arent that small, the ones that i did see were roughly the same size as the reg chins.
My fav. color would have to be the whites... they are about the only color that looks "normal" the blacks and stds just looked a little funny... i think those were the only 3 colors that i seen.
I believe when they are bred that you have to cross them to a normal lenght fur (carrior) angora... otherwise the fur just gets too long.

anyways, they are cuter in person...:D
