Tonight while feeding Ron, I noticed that her third eyelid is quite red on both eyes, and she was having a hard time retracting it. It looked really irritated and sore. Also both of her nostrils were plugged, and when I cleaned them I found blood. I got ahold of my vet and he told me to go get some Optimyxin eye drops and put one in each eye. I'm to bring her to the clinic first thing tomorrow morning for an x-ray. He promised me that she wouldn't have to be sedated. I found a 24 hour drug store and got the eye drops for her, so I hope that will help. I can hear her sniffling and squeaking and its killing me. I don't want to keep taking her out because I want her to fall asleep. I'm so afraid that tomorrow morning will be our last trip anywhere together. Please say a prayer for Ronnie.

As I was typing the message above, I heard Ron having a drink from her bowl. I got up to watch her and see how she was doing. Midway through her drink, she just sort of collapsed with her face in the bowl, and didn't have the strength to get herself back out. If I hadn't been standing right there watching, she could have drowned. I can't stand this. Unless the vet can give me some sort of miracle tomorrow, I think I'm going to have to let her go. :cry3:

Poor old girl. I know you will make the best decision for her. I will pray for a miracle but it seems like she may need a big one.

((hugs))

Oh no, Sandi! I'm so, so sorry to hear about little miss Ronnie. Spend as much time as you can, cuddling with her, just in case the vet can't work his miracle. I don't know if you still have my number, but please, please call if you need to talk or anything.

Oh no. Poor old Ronnie. Hold her and tell her how much you love her and will miss her but if she is ready to let herself go. I've had a few pass in my arms and I wish they could all go that way instead of at the vet.

Hugs from all of us

Thank you everyone. We are home from the vet now... both of us. She seemed a lot better this morning. Her eyes have improved a lot and there was no more blood in her nose. She seems more alert as well. The vet thinks she may have some fluid in her chest cavity or in her lungs, so he gave her an injection to help with that. I'm supposed to keep an eye on her breathing today and see if the injection makes a difference. I'm hoping that she'll get better and spend a bit more time here with me.

Oh, thank god! I wonder - do hedgehogs get nosebleeds because of dry air? Could that had something to do with it?

All these good thoughts you guys are sending must be working, because Ronnie seems to be feeling better! Her eyes are almost normal and there has been no more blood in her nose. She's eating fairly well, and even her mobility has improved. I was just feeding her, and when she was full she knocked the syringe right out of my hand!

Sometimes it can be simply amazing how they will have 1 bad day and then return to having pretty good days again. May Ronnnie continue to have many more good days.

Oh yay! I love a good ending. So many of the emergency posts and health posts here turn out sadly :(
