I'm just curious to see if anyone roasts their own mealworms/waxworms/crickets for their hedgehogs.

I've had this recipe in my inbox for a long time. I have fed roasted bugs before, and the hedgehogs always got nuts over them. They have this amazing nutty smell that, to be honest, smells great.

I'm not exactly certain where I got this recipe from now, or how well it works. Anyone actually roasted their own mealworms/crickets/waxworms before? If so, how well did it work, and does anything in the below "recipe" need modified?

How to roast insects.
1. Freeze or chill mealworms or crickets so that they no longer move.
2. Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
3. Spread chilled insects on cookie sheet.
4. Bake for 1 to 2 hrs. Test "doneness" buy crushing insect between fingers. If the insect is not completely dry, continue to bake. Once roasted the insects should have a nutty odor.

mealworms roasting on an open fire...
superworms nipping at your nose...

sorry; couldn't help myself

Sorry to be off topic but as I was eating my lunch of roasted chicken, I clicked on "new posts" and saw the title "roasted mealworms" and just about lost my lunch, lol.

My gals have only eaten feeeze dried mealies or the crickets in a can (once)- which they didn't like and totally made me gag...

I've never tried to roast them sorry! But I wonder if tossing them in a little flax oil just before roasting would a) speed up the time they are in my oven b) add extra nutrition...
