Hubby and I are going through the steps to foster/adopt a child.. We are getting all the paper work together.. One of the documents needed is rabies vaccination for our house pets.. The social worker has never had a family that had a chinchilla (we have two). They want to know if you can give a rabies shot to a chin? Any ideas? I have a local small animal vet.. I could call them but wonder if they will say yes to vaccinate, just to get a fee from me? Has anyone given their chins this vaccination? Any effects it can have? I just want to be informed beforehand... Social worker tells us that they will go with what ever the vet suggest.

I do believe that chins do not need a rabies vaccination. I've never heard of one getting one, nor of a chin getting rabies.

Chins do not need rabies vaccinations. A good vet would agree.

If you have vet you use that deals with chins ( a good idea for emergencies! ) they should know this.

Good luck!

ETA: There was one reported case of a chinchilla getting rabies. I'm not sure if what the grounds on this are, or even if it was really chin. You never can tell with state people.

Do they just want written proof that chins don't need rabies vaccinations? If so, just tell the vet that your not wanting to vaccinate you're chin and explain you just need a letter for the social workers. I bet the vet will do it. You might just take one or both of the chins in for a check up at the same time and get him/her to write in there that the animals are healthy and do not pose any unusual risks to a child. That way you're covered as far as the social workers go, the vet gets a little compensation with the office visit fee, and you chins get looked over by a vet to confirm they're in good health.

Possibly have the vet mention that they don't require any other vaccines as well :).

~I'm in agreement with what Alison wrote.
