I got my two girls from the pet store. When I bought Zoey they told me she was about 3 months old, but when I got the Sophie 2 months later they weren't sure on the age. What is the best way to tell? I read that Weight is the best indicator and a kitchen scale works well. I'll see about getting that and posting weights. I suspect they are about the same age because they are about the same size, but when we brought Sophie home Zoey seemed fatter. Neither one is the size I've seen in some of these pictures of adults. On that same note what age is a chin considered adult?

Also just in case does anyone know a Chin vet in the Tacoma, Wa area? I think its best to know that before It is needed.

Today on this forum I learned that Shedding is normal. when I got them I was worried they were extremely stressed because someone had told me they don't shed.

Thank you everyone:)

A pet store has absolutely no idea how old a chin is unless they bred them themselves. Chins come from wholesalers. Wholesalers don't even know (or care) how old the chins are when they send them to the store. The only way to know for sure how old a chin is is to have a pedigree or have the breeder tell you. You can't really even guess by size because you can have a 400 gm 3 month old chin or a 200 gm 3 month old chin.

Most pet folks consider a chin to be an adult at 1 year. Breeders will usually start putting chins into breeding anywhere from 8 months (black velvets) to a year.

Like tunes said- weight is not a good indicator. I have an 8 year old who is 580 grams, and a 3 year old who is pushing 1,000 grams. He was bigger than my 8 year old when he was 6 months old- he was already in the 500's at that age.

Unfortunately there really is no good way to tell.
