I just recieved the dyne from Chocolate chinchillas. i didn't think the liquid would be as thick as it is and that I could feed it to her with a syringe. I was wondering if I put a little bit on a cheerio and fed it to her if that would be okay. Any other suggestions?

im sure that would be fine, but i use dyne often and while it is thick is sucks right up into the syringe. i only give about .02 or .03 ml to my chin. i did that every day for about 1 week. now i give it a couple times a week or if i notice he is losing weight.

I would not feed straight Dyne, ever. Ryerson's recommend just barely covering the bottom of a 16 ounce water bottle and then filling the entire bottle with water. That gives you an idea of what the dilution ratio should be.

Why are you giving Dyne?

I actually tried putting it on a cheerio before, but my chin wouldn't eat it. She must not have liked the way it felt on her fingers. As soon as I gave it to her she dropped it, she did this three times before I gave up and deceided that I was going to have to use the syringe. But they actually seemed to like the taste and she never gave me a hard time.

Thanks guys. The direction on the bottle just said give 2-3 drops but said no more than an 8th of a tsp a day. I gave her very little until I heard from you all, but she did eat it on the cheerio. I will try the syringe. She is still on an antibiotic with a syringe and loves it so it shouldn't be a problem- thanks for the amount info!

I have her on the Dyne per suggestions here because she is really underweight. Why do you say it cannot be given undiluted? The directions sent to me said I can give it either way. She weighs 355 down from 450 since she had her leg amputated a month ago after a fall. The vet thought she was underweight even at 450 ( you could easily feel the spine). She has really bounced back after the amputation, she still has small traces of infection but she is pretty much healed and the hair is growing back.

If you want to take a look at her, I have her on youtube and you can see how underweight she is. BTW- she's wrapped in a paper towel because we just gave her a hydrotherapy bath recommended by the vet.

IMO, Dyne is okay in certain situations, but it's not a cure all and it's very high in sugar. The reason I said I would not give it undiluted is because some people get it in their heads that "if a little is good.........." Next thing you know, it's an entire syringe three times a day. I just think it's safer to mix it into something.

I have mixed it into critical care and I have used it in the water bottle (in addition to a regular water bottle). I personally wouldn't give it straight from the bottle. I would rather use Life line and Critical Care than Dyne if I was trying to gain weight back on a chin. Slow and steady, not quick fix. A cheerio with Dyne on it is "junk food" for a chin. I'd rather see the weight go back on in a healthy manner.

When I have a chin I need to gain weight I use Life Line, Critical Care, and canned pumpkin (straight pumpkin, not pie mix) as a blend and give it however many times a day I think it's necessary. Right now I have a girl whose top two teeth broke off for absolutely no reason, and she's getting 120 mL of this mix a day, broken up into 3 feedings.

Thanks for your input, tunes. I certainly wouldn't abuse the dyne by giving her more than she needs. She doesn't like her pellets too much even after switching to Mazuri, although I do think she is eating it a bit more than the last mix we had.

What about filling the syringe with .2 ml of the dyne and the rest with water?

Sure, that would work. You could just mix a little Dyne with water and keep it right in the fridge, to draw out when you need it instead of mixing it up each time. Put it in a little bottle, take it out of the fridge, give it a shake, draw off what you need. My chins really enjoy a cold drink straight from the fridge.

I don't know what she was eating before, but a lot of chins don't like Mazuri. She may just need more time to try it out, but if its been a month or more, you might considered trying a different pellet, like PANR or Oxbow.

Edit to add: I don't know what your chins story is and I don't advise throwing a whole bunch of changes at her at once, but when I fed Mazuri, I had problems with chins not eating it. When I switched to PANR, I saw herd-wide weight gain and overall improvement. Some chins do great on Mazuri, but others don't. Just something to think about.

tunes- thanks for that tip- I have an old bottle of her antibiotic I can clean out and refill with the dyne/water.

arf- She was just eating the kaytee brand before that you get at the pet store. I have only had her on the Mazuri about 2 weeks now. I should have ordered the PANR- people suggested both, but the mazuri was something I could get here.

So does everyone order the PANR off this site? I did call the feed store in my city but they didn't carry it but said they could order it. I don't want to have to go through a middleman if there is a more direct route to getting it.

If you only have one or two chins, sometimes it's easier to order it on line. It's also nice to buy a big bag (which is under $20.00), keep what you need, then donate the rest to a shelter. Either way works fine. You can usually get 14 pounds of feed in a priority box for $10.35 or you can buy the 50 pound bag.

I buy 50 lb bags at the feed store for about $17 a bag, but I've got 22 animals that eat it so we go through it.

Two weeks isn't very long. She may just need more time to get used to Mazuri. However, I've seen enough chins that don't like Mazuri that I would go ahead and buy some PANR. Give her both and see what she likes better. Keep a close eye on her poo though. With a diet change, dyne, and other changes all at once you may be risking an upset tummy, which can turn very bad if you're not careful.

I hope she starts packing on the grams for you!

I think I might just order the PANR since it probably won't make much of a difference if I change it now. I can already tell a difference in her- I can't feel her spine as easily as I could a week ago. I have been giving her the dyne with .2 ml in a syringe and the rest filled with water. She loves it. Also have been giving her a pinch of oats and she loves that as well.

A month ago, if anyone told me this chin would make it i would have said they were crazy. The nightmare of her biting through her stitches and getting loose out of her ecollar is starting to seem like a distant memory now, thank God.

A quick question kind of unrelated. Every time I see a chin asleep, they seem to be on one of their shelves in a sitting position with their eyes closed. We had bought Ebony one of those round beds made out of fleece that they have for ferrets. She lays on her side just like a little baby. It's the funniest thing but is it NORMAL, lol?

Do I want to order the SHOW formula or the PROFESSIONAL one?

I buy Show and think that is the one most use as well.

Oh yes! They sleep in all kinds of positions! Every one is different. I have one that likes to lay on her side, and one that sleeps standing up on his hind legs.
