Has anyone tried using potty pads for the liner in the cage? Right now I'm using the fleece liners but they get really messy fast and stinky as well. Potty pads would absorb the pee and you could replace them every day or every other day. Seems like it would be a lot easier. I just want to know if it would be safe for my little hog.

I've thought of this myself, but my concern is that they use chemicals in the pads to attract dogs to them. I don't know if the exposure to those chemicals would be harmful to a hedgehog, but I wouldn't want to take the chance. Dogs are on them to go to the washroom and thats it, hedgehogs would be constantly exposed to them...so IMO I think its better to be safe than sorry and stick with the fleece liners.

I know some people use them but IMO, they are not safe for reasons LexieHeg mentioned as well as some hedgehogs will dig at them and the fibers pose a risk to hedgie toes.

I'd stay away from them too. There are so many better options (including corduroy liners which can be washed and reused.)

If your little one's messies are localized in any way (eg, more of a mess in front of the wheel or near the food dishes), you can put down smaller fleece remnants in those areas and change them out daily. This way, their big home/cage liner stays cleaner longer.

I used to put down a fleece "wheel mat" for Satin. After she wheeled at night and made a mess of both wheel and mat, I'd use it as a rag to clean out her wheel. Tex gets a wheel mat plus another one that goes in between his tube and his water dish. Little guy is messier, so he gets two.

potty pads

I own 3 guinea pigs. I use fleece as a top layer. Then underneath I use potty training pads and then under that Carefresh pet bedding.

Vets use training pads in the cages when they have to stay overnight.

By washing the fleece 3 times before use, the fleece becomes porous and their urine is absorbed by the training pad. I change the fleece and training pads once a day.

You could also use washable potty training pads (Pooch pads) as well.
