Hello everyone. I really need everyone's wishes and prayers for my mom.

My mom got admitted into the hospital yesterday because she was having severe asthma attacks. Like usual (she goes into the hospital a lot with her asthma), they gave her solu medrol to help her breathe, and like always it shoots her blood sugar up really high. But every other time, they've been able to control it with frequent insulin. However, today we were up there visiting her, and after we were there for about an hour she started slipping in and out of consciousness. I rushed to get a nurse while my brother and sister tried to keep her as aware as they could, and the nurse rushed in and gave her some emergency insulin, kept tapping her to keep her awake, and kept asking her questions to try to keep her alert. Then she rushed out and got a huge medical group of people to watch her and told us we had to leave. We didn't hear anything for hours. I just got a call from my mom and they moved her to the ICU and have her on a continuous insulin drip. She told me not to be scared, but what we saw was her slipping into a coma (her blood sugar was so high it wouldn't even register). She said if it wasn't for us acting so quickly, she doesn't know what would have happened. And the scariest part is, even though she's stable, they still must give her the solu medrol or else she'll keep having severe asthma attacks. They said she's not allowed to eat because they can't risk her blood sugar going up any higher than the solu medrol is already making it. And when I was on the phone with her, the nurse took her blood pressure and now that is dangerously low. I just don't know what to do. I'm trying to keep my cool for my mom/brother/sister, but I'm kind of losing it here. :cry3:

Please, send wishes and prayers my mom's way. She really needs them! I'm so worried for her. :(

Brittany, I'm so sorry this is happening. I'm hoping for the best and sending virtual hugs your way. :grouphug:

Thank goodness you were there. She will be well taken care of in the ICU. I will pray for everyone incl her medical staff. Theresa

Thank you so much everyone! I'm trying to pull it all together. :( I'll keep you posted. I'm hoping by tomorrow she'll be much more alert and out of the danger zone. Even though she was talking to me over the phone, she was slurring and I could barely understand her. :(

How scary. Having a father who is asthmatic, diabetic, and who I have also witnessed in a coma, I completely understand how you are feeling. I'll be thinking of her and hope her condition improves. Take care.

Brittney, I'm sorry to hear this. I'm sure this is a very scary time for you and your family. Please know that in the ICU she is getting the best care, and one on one care. I will keep your mother my thoughts and send prayers for her and your family.

I'm so sory you are going thru this. Sending lots of prayers for you and your family.

Brit,

I am so sorry to hear this. Youre family is in my thoughts. *HUGS*

Thank you so much everyone! It means so much to me, and I'm feeling a lot better now. I just got off the phone with my mom, and she sounds so much better! She said that they brought up her blood pressure from 64/30 (when I was talking to her, probably why I could barely understand her :(), to now 90/55. Still low, but not as dangerous as it was. Her blood sugar is still high, but at the very least they have it stabilized with the insulin drip. Lets just hope that by morning, her blood pressure is normal and she's doing even better! She says they're pumping her full of a bunch of different things, and are constantly watching her. Thanks for all the good wishes guys, I think it's really helping! :)) I'll update again in the morning.

Thanks again guys! I really needed it.

Brittney continued prayers for you guys--please keep us updated in the morning if possible. Maybe a nice picture of Alex O'Loughlin would help raise her blood pressure--here you go!

How is your mom doing today, Brittany? That is really scary low blood pressure! I'm so glad you guys were there and able to do the right things to keep her going until you could get help. Hopefully she recovers fully very soon, the stress of all this is not good for anyone involved. :(

How scary for you and your family. I hope that your mom is doing better today. I will keep you and your mom in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you so much everyone! Sorry I didn't update yesterday, it was just too hectic. My mom is doing so much better. She had another close call yesterday morning, but since then she has been very stable. Her breathing is getting better, and they're even starting to wean her off of the solu medrol! She still has a lot of fluid in her lungs though, and the CT scan she had done yesterday showed severe sinusitis. However, they have her on an antibiotic (azithromycin) and hopefully that will help to clear her out the rest of the way. Her blood pressure is finally back into a healthy range, but now we're a little worried it's going to get too high (her last bp was 134/70), so they're going to keep watching that. Her blood sugar is also still high at around 350 (normal is around 100), but that should keep going down as they wean her off the steroids. But overall, she's talking so much better, she's alert, and it seems like she's out of the danger zone! She thinks she'll be out on Wednesday at the earliest, Friday at the latest. I sure hope so, I want her home and better! Unfortunately she's probably not going to be able to walk again like every other time she's on solu medrol (her muscles atrophy terribly on it), but with some physical therapy, she should hopefully be returning to her ol' self.

Thank you so much again everyone. :)) I will continue to update until she is home.
