Hello everyone,

I'm new to this site and my chins and i need some help. I just rescued 2 boys.
they spend over a year in a BOX!! in their own mess. My husband and i spend everything on medication to get them on the road to recovery.

We are currently on only one income and we need a cage for them and supplies if any one can donate them.

we do not know how old they are but they are a decent size. they have had a hard life, the people before the people we rescued them from didn't have them in very good conditions either.

But they are finally safe and sound and in a loving and forever home.

Any help you could offer is greatly appreciated or if you could give any advise i'd appreciate it as these are our first chins.

Jumping in with both feet, huh?;) Congratulations on your new chin-children!

You can check the classifieds on here or check Craigslist for good, cheap used cages. Lots of people on here also sell any other supplies you may need, at great prices!

You say you have spent quite a bit on medication, I assume you have a good vet to help you rehab these guys? Besides being dirty, what is wrong with them?

Good luck and thanks for helping the little ones!

Yes, definately try craigslist. Also, check out the chinchilla FAQ's for basic chinchilla care and other information. And check out the classifieds, you may find a good quality chinchilla feed from members on here for much cheaper than what you can find in any petstore. If you have any specific questions, do not hesitate to ask. Best of luck with them.

Well I'm sure the chins are very happy you came to their rescue.

Here are some pages you should read that will help you out about chinchillas.

Is Lynwood anywhere near Crystal Lake?
I had a cage come in with a rescue, it is crappy but it would work until you got something better. I was going to just toss it out. It is functioning, just not up to my standards.

P.M.'d you!!
Kristy - it's near I-80 and the Indiana border!!

I am willing to take any cage, right now. anything will do.

my husband is going to build them something more suitable when we can, but until then anything is better then nothing.

i am will to come and get it.

thanks,
M

Hi,
I can send you a few toys if that would help. Just pm me and let me know.

I am so glad you rescued these two guys.

I will be completely honest here and say I don't think you actually need a cage to be donated, or anything else for that matter. Looking at your CL ads, you never mention in the one that you need a cage for rescues, just that you are looking for a cheap/free chinchilla cage, mini fridge, 2 mountain bikes, a grill, some cat scratching posts, a new full/queen mattress and an air popcorn popper.

None of these things have anything to do with a pair of rescued chinchillas needing a cage or other supplies. You didn't even mention in that ad that you needed other supplies for the chinchillas, just that you were looking for a cage.

A chinchilla cannot live in a box for their whole life. They would have chewed through that box within one night. You also didn't mention what was wrong with them, just that you spent all your money on their medication. I'm sorry, but this entire thing just seems shady to me. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong and will apologize, but I truly don't think I'm wrong.

I told her about some $15 cages that're small, but better than cardboard - let's see what happens!

What are you keeping the chinchillas in now? And if you have no supplies what are you feeding them? If you just got them and can't afford them, I'd strongly consider giving them to a rescue or owner who can afford to give them what they need. Taking them from one owner who couldn't supply them with what they needed to another owner who is struggling to supply them with what they need, doesn't help the animal much.

While I applaud the fact that you're trying to help them, your CL ads do concern me. If you're "getting off your feet" and only have "one source of income" and have no supplies for these two animals then I'd say take them to the vet that you've visited and see if there's a local shelter. Also, members on here may be willing to take them or point you in the direction of a good rescue.

Or, maybe like thousands of other Americans with their pets, they could have just dumped them in the street?

Please, without knowing the entire situation, stop telling people to get rid of their pets because they aren't up to your standards of care. She already said she spent money on their vet bills. I know from personal experience that's enough to slam even a rock solid budget, let alone someone who is struggling because of the economy.

Chinchilla's don't NEED a 6 foot cage with $300.00 worth of toys, hidey huts, hammocks, wheels, etc. That's your choice. If this person can provide these chins with a decent cage, a proper diet, some wood chews, and lots of love - who are we to judge why they have them?

I am the one that emailed you to offer some food and dust I'll get it mailed out to you Monday I'll do anything I can to help you out if at all possible. I'm not going to sell it to you but it's to help out the chins and also a few chew things. It's just extra that I have! I'm sure you will learn alot here from reading up on everything. Good Luck!

I'm the one that e-mailed Marishka and invited her here.

I have been in correspondance with him in PM about her chins- she genuinely does seem to care about them.

Please do not judge without knowing the whole story, like Peggy said.

I'm not telling people to dump their pets. I understand that they may be in a sticky situation as far as money. If the animals are living in poor conditions without food or a cage I just stated that they may consider giving them to a better home. I never said they were bad owners or they should get rid of their animals permanently. Giving them to a better home could be a relative until they get off their feet. My personal standards of care have nothing to do with this, from what it sounds like they can't afford the feed or house them. I never said it was their fault. That's why I said ask for a rescue or a member on here if they could help so they wouldn't be dumped because that's what they very well may do if they can't get any donations.
Nothing about what I said was judgmental. I said I applauded them, I never said they didn't care about their animals or they should dump them. I never said they needed a $300 cage or anything like that, I don't appreciate that. I said from what they're saying it sounds like they can't feed them and give them BASIC supplies.
I understand they love their pets, I'm not saying just "dump" them, only if they can't take care of them rehome them with someone who can. I do not see what's wrong with that.

And the comment about your "personal standards of care" were not addressed to you specifically. It was you in a general sense. You're not the only person in this thread who came down on the OP. The point was to back off of a new member and give them a chance. You don't know the whole situation just by reading a Craigslist ad. I could ask for a Porche on there, that doesn't mean I can't care for my chins.

It's possible their hearts are in the right place, even though their wallets might not be. Rescues are overwhelmed right now with animals who NEED rescuing. Can't we just put these folks on the right track to proper chin care and leave the rest out of the posts?

If you go to chinworld.com , they have a monthly supply of food dust treats and so on for around $14 + shipping.

Check out the classifieds like I stated before, many people have cheap supplies that they are willing to sell and many will give you a deal.

Also try Kajiji.com and Hoobly.com, they're much like CL and may have a deal on a cage. They're free as well.

You can buy cheaper through classifieds than you can through chinworld.com. You'll also get faster service and much lower shipping fees. I can fill an entire priority box full of food for the same as their "special help" for economic hard times.
