There is this lady down the street from me. We chat and such, I would call her a friend, but not like a super close friend.

She has had this puppy for over 6 months now, it's the daughter of our chihuahua ( we didn't breed her the previous owners were rehoming her and the pup).

Yesterday she contacts me and says she's sick.. of course I'm like rolleyes.gif I'm not the fix all for every animal in town, even though obviously not everyone around here realizes that.

It had diarrhea... with a little bit of blood, hadn't been eating etc. This dog has a history of it's owners leaving stuff it can eat where it can get it ( more than one chocolate incident ) so I considered that, but they had been sick there lately too, so I told her it was probably just the flu. Today she brings it over, I directed her back outside with the sick dog ( you don't bring a sick dog in someone's house! ), and I check it over, gums are a little pale, not too bad, capillary reflex is okay, throat looks okay, stomach has not blockages but is all tense and tied up. Then she tells me she can't keep anything down, not even water, won't eat, and has been puking.. SHOCKED3.gif The local vet doesn't carry a snap for parvo... another FRANKshrug.gif I know they mostly do large animals, but hello parvo is a big deal for dogs. So I call around, find a place that can do it, the test is $40.50 anti-vomit and anti-diarrhea meds run it to about $100. She only has $30... :realmad:

So, we find some anti-puke meds, it's classic symptoms of parvo, which I seen way too many times ( nothing fun about puking, ****ting puppies).

Of course I ask.. did you get her shots yet? Anyone know what the answer was? Seriously... PUPPIES NEED SHOTS. So I put her on a treatment schedule, and am going to stop THERE and give fluids three times a day until she can hold stuff down. The kicker is they have lost dogs in the PAST to parvo!

You can get a 7 way at the farm store for $6! Or have the vet do it for like $20. Plus Nebraska requires they have their rabies ( another $30, and it's restricted so the vet has to administer it ).

I feel so bad for the puppy. Luckily it's in the first stages, and hopefully will come through okay.

Just had to let that out, and remind everyone that if you can afford the vet, don't get the pet.

Wow. I shouldn't be shocked since there are so many bad pet owners, but they still never seize to amaze me. :err:

Poor puppy. I hope he gets the meds. and shots he needs to live a long and happy life.

If she's had dogs die from parvo before, shouldn't she wait for a while before bringing another puppy into her house? From what I understand about parvo, it can last on fabrics, furnishings, etc. for a LONG time.

Poor puppy... I hope she comes out of it okay :(

Some people, it is like this person I know who has lost dogs to parvo. What do they do, keep bringing new ones home, no shots or do shots sometime after the puppy or dog gets there. Well they have lost like 4 in the last year to parvo and they keep bringing new ones in and they it is like oh no they died from parvo.

Last time I said well what do you expect? You brought home a puppy that hadnt had shots and waited to have its shots done, duh.

Oh Goodness. Parvo is not funny at all. You be careful too, Nicole! That is terrible how she brought a sick dog into your house.

In Ireland there have been MANY parvo cases, some survived others didn't. Mixing puppies with other puppies from different parts of the country didn't help. Our town is bad for parvo. Infact, ALL the parvo pups we had to stay in with the vets for whatever time it took to get them back to their normal(ish) self.

Symptoms are bloody stool, vomiting. Parvo is a disease that attacks the intestinal tract...

All of my dogs are vaccinated, and I cleaned the area ( entry way) she was in. I also gave my dogs boosters because they were about due anyway.

She called this morning and said that the puppy died.

It has been years since their last parvo dog, and it was not even in this house. But the fact is, shouldn't you learn from your mistakes?

They went to California for 3 weeks to visit family over the holidays, she couldn't pay to get her dogs shots though?

people's priorities are screwed up today. :realmad:totally out of control. it's all about them--"me me me" "what can I do for me, I can get me a puppy!" "What can I do for my puppy? nothing, that's out of my hands--too much money, too much time, too much responsibility" "oops, my puppy died--time to get a new one!"

This is just plain sad. Isn't it just common sense that when you get a new puppy without shots, the first thing you do is set up a schedule to get its shots?! And it's not like shots are HUGELY pricey. This is incredibly frustrating to hear... That poor puppy's death could have been completely avoided with a simple vaccination. UGH!
