Bad Chin
There is this lady down the street from me. We chat and such, I would call her a friend, but not like a super close friend.
She has had this puppy for over 6 months now, it's the daughter of our chihuahua ( we didn't breed her the previous owners were rehoming her and the pup).
Yesterday she contacts me and says she's sick.. of course I'm like rolleyes.gif I'm not the fix all for every animal in town, even though obviously not everyone around here realizes that.
It had diarrhea... with a little bit of blood, hadn't been eating etc. This dog has a history of it's owners leaving stuff it can eat where it can get it ( more than one chocolate incident ) so I considered that, but they had been sick there lately too, so I told her it was probably just the flu. Today she brings it over, I directed her back outside with the sick dog ( you don't bring a sick dog in someone's house! ), and I check it over, gums are a little pale, not too bad, capillary reflex is okay, throat looks okay, stomach has not blockages but is all tense and tied up. Then she tells me she can't keep anything down, not even water, won't eat, and has been puking.. SHOCKED3.gif The local vet doesn't carry a snap for parvo... another FRANKshrug.gif I know they mostly do large animals, but hello parvo is a big deal for dogs. So I call around, find a place that can do it, the test is $40.50 anti-vomit and anti-diarrhea meds run it to about $100. She only has $30... :realmad:
So, we find some anti-puke meds, it's classic symptoms of parvo, which I seen way too many times ( nothing fun about puking, ****ting puppies).
Of course I ask.. did you get her shots yet? Anyone know what the answer was? Seriously... PUPPIES NEED SHOTS. So I put her on a treatment schedule, and am going to stop THERE and give fluids three times a day until she can hold stuff down. The kicker is they have lost dogs in the PAST to parvo!
You can get a 7 way at the farm store for $6! Or have the vet do it for like $20. Plus Nebraska requires they have their rabies ( another $30, and it's restricted so the vet has to administer it ).
I feel so bad for the puppy. Luckily it's in the first stages, and hopefully will come through okay.
Just had to let that out, and remind everyone that if you can afford the vet, don't get the pet.
