Last week I had a gentleman from Colorado email to ask if it would be alright to send some of his product to try with the chinchillas. It's a paper product for use as litter/bedding with small animals. I am going to use it and tell him how it worked with the chins.

A couple days ago I received a couple of nice small bags and used it today with cage cleaning. It is nothing like Carefresh or other paper bedding products. It's very soft and much like the softer pine shavings in texture. The things that I like about it so far are that it covers much better than the pine shavings I am using and the chins don't seem to want to eat it. I think that the chins think it is just the pine shavings that they are used to having already.

I put this in several cages of different types to see how it will work in each one. So far the jury is out on how well it absorbs, I'll know in a couple days how it does. It's soft, the chins don't eat it and it seems to cover the bottoms of the pans very well like pine shavings do when they are scattered.

Anyhow, let me know if you have used this product before for chins. I'd like to give the company as many opinions and constructive comments as I can. I'm not sure if I would use it because of freight of the product and such.

The website is www.papershavings.com Take a look and see what you think. :)

He e-mailed me as well and I told him I would like to try it out. I used Carefresh back when I had just a few chins and I never had any problems. It was just so expensive! Once I receive it, I'll try it out and post my thoughts on it.

Let us know how it's working. I think it would cut down on dust, but wouldn't have that nice shaving smell. What does it smell like? Do you know what an average bag ( large bag ) runs? Did the include any pricing options or such?

I cleaned cages today so I got to see how the new Paper Shavings held up. They did pretty well and had about the same absorbency of the shavings. I didn't notice any weird odor either. The chins didn't eat it and it didn't scatter any more than the shavings. It definitely can be used with chinchillas without any problems.

It doesn't really smell like anything, Nicole. I believe it was $5 a bag, but then there would be freight. I was thinking of going to a few feed/animal supply stores to see if they may want to try being distributors. There just isn't any space here for me to get a few tons of bedding or I probably would try it out. Freight is just so expensive unless I order a whole lot all at once to make it worth it.

I use recycled paper bedding (made from old magazines and newspapers) that I got at the petstore. It worked well for a while, and wasn't that expensive, but since I switched to a lixit water bottle, Chinchy's been peeing a lot more and the cage gets fairly stinky after a week when I'm about to clean it. Since I've only had him for a couple months, it's the only thing I've tried, but as soon as I'm finished with the bag I'm going to switch to Aspen litter pans and fleece liners.

It's kind of odd though because before it didn't stick like that, I suppose since he's urinating more I've got to step it up. It'll be a lot easier to clean the cage more often once I switch over to fleece and litter pans.
