The backslash is actually an important part of a counter top.
It is there to protect the wall, from wiping and smooshing the wet on it, as well as preventing anything spilt to run down the back of the counter and down the wall. If it was something like say... chicken soup, that would be nasty to have broth down the back of your wall. Even with caulking it in time it may get worn or cracked and we often don't get it redone right away, etc.
So what I'm saying it I think it's good you went with it.
