YOUR opinion please?

Which would you prefer for yourself and why: Two Male or Two Female Chinchillas? And if only ONE, which gender and why?

If it was my first time out, and not having had chins before, I would go for a same sex pair, but which sex wouldn't matter. You'll get different opinions on which is better, male or female, but bottom line is which one appeals to you personally. I have both males and females that are really laid back and some that are not. It depends on the individual chin.

I would definitely not start out with a male female pair until I learned a lot about chins and breeding.

All males here and they're all very sweet and love human interaction, except for Buster, he bites but he's coming around slowly but surely; he didn't exactly have the best life before I took him in. Definitely stay with same sex pairs though.

Two brothers or two sisters would be GREAT. I'd almost lean more towards males, but females would be good.

If you can find a couple of same sex rescue chins, that would probably be the way to go. :D Well, I am biased...it's always good to give the less desirable chins a chance at a good home (and I am being inundated with rescues lately...)

I'm with Peggy. Go with a same sex pair that you are happy with and seem to like you. But you may want to visit with a breeder before deciding(if you can), that way you can get somewhat of an idea on what chins are going to be curious about you and not hide from you every chance it gets. If you just go by a picture on a website, it can bite you in the butt.

Interpretation of this post: "I have two perfect chinchillas for you, so no need to look any further!"

Hmm, why would you "lean more towards males"? I started off with one male so of course I just added more males b/c I'm not breeding them, so I'm only familiar with males. Do females tend to have more 'womanly' problems that can be difficult... like humans? I'm so lucky that I've never had any women troubles but I sure know a lot who have had issues.

I wouldn't say that I thought that consciously...maybe I was trying to promote some of the ones I have here as being perfect for adopting, who knows?

Males just seem to be less worried with anything but living in the moment. They don't get as caught up in being annoyed and usually don't sass as much. Females are nice, don't get me wrong. If I were to get only two chins, I would probably want two brothers. ;) My first chin was a male and I loved having him in my life....he was so wonderful, despite the humping my ankle thing he did when he was 6 months old...

See, and I've had all girls, had 5, now down to 4. I've never had a problem with them sassing or being mean during certain times of the month.

Definitely go with same sex. And pick whichever sex you want.

All males need hair ring checks, which females don't need. Some females spray pee, but not all. Of all the 5 girls I've owned I've never been sprayed. And boys like to leave little presents for you on their fleece items sometimes. Which girls don't do. Oh, and boys sometimes like to clean themselves or mess around with their bits, normally at the most inopportune time (like when guests are around)! haha :D

This is true...the males "clean" themselves at the most embarrassing times. It's awful to have to explain that to people... "What? Is there something wrong with that little guy? WHOOOOAAAA!!" I turn bright red and sputter out a sentence fragment to try to explain, but the damage is already done.

I agree with Peggy start out with a same sex pair. I like males, but in the end either makes great pets and both have thier own issues

As bad as I am in math, I still say that the male chinchilla penis big compared to the rest of the size of his body. I love my males though and they are very affectionate towards moi.

I'm obviously biased, but I'd vote for males. IMO, I'd rather deal with hair ring checks and humping over possibly getting sprayed, but that's just me! :)) And just a side note, it's hilarious when the boys do try to spray - Kenai tried once when we were attempting intros - he reared up, had some "choice words" with Kokomo, and all he ended up with was a puddle underneath him... poor guy!

You should always go with a same sex pair if you are not going to be a quality breeder. I have both boys and girls and have no feelings on who or what is better. I have affectionate boys and girls. Getting sprayed is nothing! Hair rings checks are a little icky though lol!

I'm biased because I have only boys.

It just happened that Mr. Whiskers was a male, but since then, the other males that I've added are all sweet and loving to me and, in the case of Mr. Whiskers and The Snuggler, who are caged together, each other.

I'm sure both sexes have their advantages/disadvantages, so go with the one that you love who interacts the best with YOU. You won't go wrong!!!

When I got my two, I had the option of getting two males or two females. I chose to get the two boys...all of the critters in my house are boys, I just tend to like their personalities better. BUT, of course, one of my boy chins turned out to be a girl, and I have to admit, I love doting on her as my "little girl" and giving her cute pink things and gushing about how pretty she is :)

While I don't mind the hair ring checks (it can't be worse than doing dogs' anal glands), or even the male "cleaning", which I think is just hilarious, I think if (coughwhencough) I get another chin, it will be another female.

Haha, I'd rather do dog anal glands. Although I've never done a hair ring check, but for the anals you don't have to play with their junk.

My girls have never sprayed me, guess they just love me! :D

Well when I first got Liv I was told he was a girl and I was happy cause I'd love a little girl of my own, but he ended up being a boy. At first I have to admit I was a little bummed to change his name from Olivia to Liv, but I couldn't be happier. Liv's the most incredible chin ever AND if he weren't a boy I wouldn't have ended up with my three other boys (since I'm only a pet owner I stick with same sexes). I love all my boys to death and though the hair ring checks are sometimes a little icky, they're all worth it to me. I find male pets to usually be more mellow, but girls are wonderful too (though I can't speak from experience for chins). Still though, I think the right sex will find you, or maybe just the right chin and that'll lead you on your way! I do suggest a pair though, whichever sex you choose.
